Bly th council discusses Dinsley parking problem
Blyth village council will look at
the problems of a safe route from
the Blyth fire hall versus the need
for parking on Dinsley Street East.
Councillor Ken Brown, a mem
ber of the fire department, opened
the subject, saying he felt Dinsley
Street, from Mill Street at the fire
hall to Queen Street should be
designated a fire route with no
parking allowed. When firemen are
rushing to a call and cars are
parked on the side of the street
there is no where for traffic to get
out of the way of the trucks, he
said.
Councillor Dave Lee, another
firemen, said that at a recent fire
when there was a large gathering
at the funeral home and the theatre
crowd was going in, he decided as a
fire truck driver, that he couldn’t
get up Dinsley Street at all and took
another route.
But Reeve Albert Wasson
worried about the loss of even more
parking space in the parking-short
downtown area. He wondered how
many seconds the firemen would
actually lose in the situation.
“Anybody from town who hears
the siren knows to run for the
hills,” he said. “And visitors will
soon find out. What I’m trying to
balance out is the number of times
you have to come through with a
fire truck and the amount of
parking to be lost.”
Councillor Lee suggested that
even if parking were prohibited on
one side of the street it would help
the situation. Reeve Wasson
argued instead, if some action must
be taken, it would be best to widen
the street by removing the boule
vards.
The Reeve pointed out the
village has just rezoned the Dinsley
street area to make it a core
commercial area. “What good is it
to zone it core commercial if you
don’t have parking,” he said.
Councillor Lee saw the point,
saying council has probably created
even more traffic congestion by
designated the area commercial.
No action was taken at this time.
