Hats off to Legers Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Donna White was busy last Wednesday morning distributing hats to families who were participating in Brussels recycling program. Mary Jane Leger receives one of the chapeaus that were donated by Glad to promote the program. Mrs. Leger’s children, Amanda, Ben and Philip are with her. Brussels By Bonnie Gropp Phone 887-9114 or 523-4792 About eight years ago a group of people who had attended F. E. Madill together decided to get together yearly for a reunion. This year the “Old Boys’’ and their families met at the home of Don, Connie, Amanda, Dan and Mike Pletch in IJderton. Attending were: Dale, Ruth, Steven and Tim Machan of Brus­ sels; Gord, Jane, Todd and Trevor Machan of Bluevale; Murray, Gayle, and Becky McArter of Brussels; Dave, Angie, Jeff and Kevin Huether of Brampton; Brian. Elaine, Mandy, and Ellen Work­ man of Brussels: Greg, Sue, Shane Trevor and Ainsley Wilson of Brussels. Everyone took part in a bailgame and the children had a great time playing soccer in the rain. Mr. and Mrs. Mel Jacklin and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Elliott of Mitchell have returned from a holiday at Elliott Lake. They tra­ velled on the Chi-Cheemaun from BRUSSELS QUEEN OF THE FAIR DANCE SAT. While in Elliott Lake they stayed at the Laurentian Lodge. The scenery was beautiful. They also travelled to Sault Ste. Marie and went over into the state of Michi­ gan for a day of shopping. Tammy Elliott of Mitchell stayed at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Nancy Coyne and girls while her parents holidayed at Elliott Lake. Several local residents attended the “Island Weekend’’ hosted by John and Pauleen Kerkhof, at their Queen St. home. Mary, Frank, Grant and Leslie Stretton; Brenda, Gerry, Brooklyn, and Brent Wheel­ er; Bob Pearson; Mary Jean and Wayne Bell; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Roetescinder; Donna and Randy White; and Mark, Bonnie, Ashley and Joshua Gropp all visited the ‘Kerkhof Resort’ for a weekend of games, food, activities, island music, and bonfires. Out of town guests were from London, Scarborough, Windsor, Stratford, Palmerston, Listowel, Wyoming (Ontario), Barrie, Hamil­ ton, and Willowdale. In all over 60 people enjoyed the warm hospi­ tality offered by John and Pauleen. If anyone is interested in the prize list for the fall fair, the books are now available. You can pick them up at the Brussels Post Office or contact Barb Mutter at 887-6117. Last call for Queen contestants Seven girls have entered the Brussels Queen of the Fair contest, which will take place on September 9. There is a limit of 12 competitors on the contest so anyone interested still might be able to participate. Contestants must be between the ages of 17 and 23 by August 1, 1989. The winner will participate in the Miss Mid-Western Ontario Contest to be held at the Lucknow Fair and will represent Brussels at the 1990 CNE for four all-expense paid days. In addition she will receive many gifts and will attend several other events. The girls will be expected to give a two minute speech of their choice on any topic pertaining to farming. They will also be inter­ viewed by the judges and these speeches and interviews will be judged at the dance on September 9. Previous contestants are encour­ aged to participate and if you are interested you must contact th committee by August 26. Plans are underway for the Queen of the Fair Dance which will take place on September 9. There are seven contestants entered in the contest this year. The dance will be held in the arena. The contestant’s speeches will begin at 8:00, followed by Mozart Melody Makers at 9 p.m. and culminating in the crowning of the Queen at 10 p.m. Several new families have arriv­ ed in Brussels.
