In a draw from all the bike rodeo participants in Huron, Perth,

Blair won a third place prize of a remote control car in the
Kindergarten to two category. Constable John Marshall, who
conducted the Blyth Recreation Bike Rodeo, presented thegifts

Recreation Program.
‘Eyes’ Blyth sermon theme
Greeting the congregation at
Blyth United Church on Sunday,
August 13 were Fred and Mary
Howson. Ushers were Jack, Agnes
and Laurie Wharton.
As a prelude to the service, John
Ramirez, pianist for the month of
August, played a lovely collection
of musical numbers including
“Melody” by Veklor Kossenko.
Flowers in the church sanctuary
were placed in loving memory of
Michael Vincent and Evelyn Smith.
Deepest sympathy is extended to
their families. Evelyn will be sadly
missed and always remembered as
a faithful and willing worker in
church organizations, U.C.W. and
community.
Rev. Ramirez chose for his
sermon topic “Eyes that Focus on
Jesus ‘The Master’ ”. The scrip
ture reading, Matt. 14(22-33) was
the basis for his message. Jesus, in
need of rest and time of prayer sent
the multitudes away and his disci
ples out to sea. While Jesus was
away, a storm arose and the
disciples became afraid. Finally
after many hours of communion
with His Father, Jesus returned
walking towards them on the
water. Peter said, “Lord, if it be
thou, bid me come unto thee on the
water.” When he started to walk
on the water, instead of looking at
Jesus, he looked down, became
afraid and cried out “Lord save
me”. Jesus then stretched forth his
hand and said “0 thou of little

Marcia and children Patrick, Jason,
Linda, Richard and Matthew called
on several friends in Blyth last
Saturday. They included Alice Slor-
ach, Florence Quinn, Margaret

McElroy.

Board of the Blyth Festival. He
presently serves an Anglican
Church at Chapleau in Northern
Ontario, a town between three to
four thousand people.
*****
This week’s People’s Column
would like to pay tribute to a
remarkable Blyth lady who recently
slipped away from us in her sleep
one Tuesday morning. She was
Evelyn Smith, who resided on
Victoria St. with her husband
Charlie and brother Gordon Mc
Dowell.
Evelyn was a clever lady from
both an intellectual and practical
point of view. The dynamics of her
faith in God and in people influenc
ed many lives in many areas.
x _ She gave unanswering support to
her four Blyth ministers from 1976 -
1989. She supported church organ
izations: Bible Study each week
was one in which she displayed
outstanding qualities of leadership,
and U.C.W. was another where
members will never forget her
manner of delivering in depth
addresses, and her expressive
reading of poems and prayers. She
supported the Blyth Festival - just
hours before Evelyn was taken, she
and Charlie had enjoyed a play
production. In the Women’s Insti
tute - she could not say “no” to
requests because of her faith in the
kind of work this organization and
others undertake.
Evelyn was noted for the
thoroughness of her work. She put
her heart and soul into all things
she did, they were never consider
ed duties but always her pride and
joy, whether it was tossing a salad
in the home or in the church
kitchen; preparing the elements for
church communion, which she and
her husband gladly did for eight
years; plying her needle expertly at
the church quiltings; or enjoying
every minute playing one of her
favourite games, Lost Heir.
Those who knew Evelyn Sprith
well realize that each day was a
fulfilling one for her. She was a
living example of the maxim: “If
you can’t say anything nice about a
person known or unknown to you,
then say nothing.”
We are better people for having
conversed and worked with this
fine lady. Her spirit will linger long
within us.
Evelyn Smith was president of
Blyth U.C.W. for 1979 and 1980
She was president of Huron-West
Regional United Church Women
for 1981 and 1982.
Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Campbell
visited with his mother Mrs. Mary
Campbell on the weekend.
Wednesday is night of the total
eclipse of the moon. There will not
be any more totals for several
years.
