Many area youngsters found the new wading pool in Blyth a welcome addition last week as
temperatures soared to the high 20’s. The pool was a project of the Blyth Lions Club.
Letter to the editor
Friends, not strangers kids biggest threat
THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1989. PAGE 21.
THE EDITOR,
Recently, we heard of a five year
old girl in British Columbia who,
while camping at a provincial park
with her parents, disappeared. The
little girl was found three days,
later, cold and mosquito-bitten, but
alive. Cassie spent the third night
in the park because she was afraid
to call out to the searchers when
they passed by her, the previous
day. Cassie, like so many other
children, was taught not to talk to
strangers.
“Stay away from strangers’’ is
probably the most common warn
ing parents give their children in an
effort to prevent abduction or
exploitation. Unfortunately, such a
warning is misleading and can
cause more harm than good to the
child. For years, we have all been
taught, “Don’t talk to strangers,’’
but current studies have indicated
that the majority of crimes commit
ted against children, are committed
by someone known to the child.
Since teaching a child to be leery of
strangers is obviously not enough,
parents must teach their children
how to respond to different situa
tions.
In an Effort to help reduce crimes
against children, Victims of Vio
lence has put together a brochure
outlining the common lures used in
abducting children. It is a guideline
for parents to follow when teaching
their children how to respond to
various situations. If you would like
a copy of this brochure, please
