Straw ignites
Firemen from the Blyth and District Fire Department quickly douse the flames in a straw fire on the
farm of Jack DeJong in Hullett township on Wednesday. The fire burned several acres of straw but
winds kept it away from the uncombined part of the field.
A Grand Valley family who came
to take in a performance of the
Caravan Theatre Company last
Monday night had an unhappy
ending to their trip. The family was
on its way home from the perfor
mance when their car caught fire
on Highway 4 near the Queens
Villa apartments. The couple got
out of the car then managed to get
back in long enough to rescue a
couple of bags of clothes but were
unable to enter the car again when
the flames became too hot from the
electrical fire.
Blyth Fire Chief Paul Josling
said the car was completely de
stroyed.
Wednesday night firemen were
called to the farm of Jack DeJong
on Concession 13 of Hullett town-
ship to extinguish a fire in newly
combined straw. Chief Josling said
a truck had been pulled into the
field and the heat from the exhaust
ignited the tinder-dry straw. The
flames burned over several acres of
straw by the time firemen arrived
and quickly extinguished the blaze.
Luckily the wind was blowing away
from the uncombined portion of the
field and away from equipment.

Man admits assault
A Blyth man will appear in
provincial court in Wingham Aug.
30 for sentencing after pleading
guilty to assaulting his wife and the
OPP officer who came to investi
gate the incident.
Carmen Russell MacDonald of
Blyth pleaded guilty to one count of
assault and one count of assaulting
a police officer in provincial court in
Wingham Wednesday.
The court was told that police
were called to the MacDonald
home on Morris St. on January 27,
1989 and were met at the door by
Todd and Joanne MacDonald who
testifed Carmen MacDonald had
left the house after an argument in
which he had pushed his wife
against the wall. Mrs. MacDonald
had fallen, breaking a piece of
furniture as she did.
While the police officers were
there, Mr. MacDonald returned
home, became angry and pointed a
shotgun (which Mr. MacDonald’s
lawyer later pointed out was empty
and hadn’t been used for years) at
the officers. They arrested him but
while they were going down stairs
while taking him to the police car,
Mr. MacDonald kicked Constable
Shaw in the head.
Mr. MacDonald’s attorney asked
that a pre-sentence report be
prepared before Judge R.G.E.
Hunter passed sentence. The re
port will be preprared before the
Aug. 30 court date.
