Brussels man gets fine, probation over assault Police handy for Brussels crash A Brussels man received a three month probation term and was fined $500 after pleading guilty to assaulting another village resident. Chuck Mason of 210 Turnberry St., Brussels pleaded guilty in Wingham Provincial Court Wed­ nesday to attacking John Janes in Brussels. The court was told that at 12:30 a.m. on June 17 Mr. Mason asked Mr. Janes to go with him to the Brussels library to see another man but when he got him there he struck Mr. Janes several times and ripped jewellery off his neck. Both Firemen battle combine fire Brussels firemen were called to extinguish a blaze that started in a wheat field at Concession 3, Lot 30 of Morris Township, just north of Brussels on Wednesday, July 26. Jim Bolesworth of RR 1, Ethel was unloading grain when he noticed that a fire had started in back of his combine’s cab. Fortunately, accor­ ding to a Fire Department spokes­ man, the firefighters .-’ere able to put out the flame before a. y of the wheat was ignited. Estimated damage to the com­ bine was unkown but the cab and wiring harness were destroyed. Cause of the blaze was also undetermined. Mr. Janes and another man tried to stop the assault. Mr. Mason admitted he should not have attacked the man. “The guy who I assaulted, I felt he had it coming to him but the police said you can’t do that’’, he said. Judge R. G. E. Hunter told Mr. Mason “with your record you’re borderline going to jail’’. Coulter of RR 3, Brussels. Ms. Coulter pleaded guilty in provincial court in Wing­ ham Wednesday to impaired driv- ing and will lose her licence for 12 months. The court was told Ms. Coulter got into her vehicle in the Brussels Last contest winner named Mrs. Hugh Johnston of Brussels is the final winner of the “Sounds Fishy” contest in The Citizen. Mrs. Johnston’s entry was chos en from among the entries that had correctly found the four letters in the “Sounds Fishy” promotion page in last week’s issue. She will win a fish a chip dinner for four at the Brussels Hotel. This was the final week for the contest. Brussels People Annie Thynne treated her family members to a dinner in honour of her 89th birthday. Thirty-seven guestrs sat down to a delicious roast beef dinner, served by the Anglican Church ladies, in the church basement on Sunday even­ ing, July 23. Ray Crawford, brother-in-law of the celebrant, said grace. Vonne Brister of Orillia, paid tribute in a fitting manner and proposed a toast to her grandmother. Annie thanked everyone for their atten­ dance, the gifts and cards she had received, and to the ladies who had done a superb job of preparing and serving the meal. Following dinner a social hour followed on the lawn at Anne’s home. Guests were present from Brussels, Wingham, Shelbourne, London, Orillia and Bayfield. Ada Thornton of Kitchener and Mildred Jacklin spent an enjoyable day on Thursday at Niagara on the Lake and took in a one and one half hour boat tour on the Niagara River. Hotel parking lot about 1:45 a.m. July 1, put the car in gear and backed into a pickup truck. Con­ stables King and Dore of the Wingham O.P.P. detachment were sitting outside the Brussels OPP office at the time and heard the crash and went running to the parking lot only a few feet away. They found Ms. Coulter sitting in her car, crying. After smelling the odour pf alcohol on her breath they gave her a breathalyser test that showed readings of 220 and 210 mg. of alcohol per 1000 ml. of blood. Readings over 80 mg. are considered impaired. Judge Hunter fined the woman $750 as well as the 12 month suspension. End of Season...
