From the Minister’s Study
Salvation is why Jesus came
BY DON VAffi
If I were to stand on a street
corner and ask the passerby why
Jesus came to this earth, I’m sure I
would get many different answers.
We need not consult any other
source than the Bible for the
answer to this vital question, in fact
Jesus Himself in Matthew 20:28
tells us exactly why He came. Jesus
Christ said in verse 28 “even as the
son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to minister,
and to give His life a ransom for
many.’’
In that Jesus came to minister or
to serve, we see Him as our
example. In that he gave His life a
ransom for many, we see Him as
our Savior.

BAKELAAR - DEVRIES
Veronica Bakelaar, RR 2, Blyth
and Ralph de Vries, Auburn, were
united in marriage at Blyth Chris
tian Reformed Church on Saturday,
May 27, 1989. The groom is the son
of John and Tina de Vries of
Auburn and the bride is the
daughter of Jim and Huika Bake
laar of RR 2, Blyth. Rev. Warren
Lammers officiated. Organist was
Janine Buffinga, friend of the

ette Wassenaar of Wellandport,

Clinton, sister of the bride and
Miss Jennifer Van Raamsdonk of
Georgetown, friend of the bride.
If we call ourselves Christians,
what is our reaction to His life first
of all as our example? The world
says do your own thing, fulfill
yourself, acquire as much as you
can, but Christianity says be
Christlike, give yourself for others.
There is no language in this
world that speaks louder than the
language of ChristlikC', self-forgett
ing otherism. It has an appeal
which nothing else has.
Jesus was more accessible than
His disciples were, and He had
time to stop and meet a need, even
when He was urgently on His way
to meet another need.
Jesus was characterized by
ceaseless energy, filling His days
During his talk he referred to the
United Church’s statement on the
subject of being saved. First, in
reference to Mathew 18 (3-6) we
must be bom again, made new
creatures by the spirit of God. This
change or regeneration comes
about by allowing God into our
hearts.
Mr. Cowan believes this can be a
gradual process and doesn’t neces
sarily have to be a sudden happen
ing as in Paul’s case when he was
blinded on route to Damascus.
Faith and repentance are necessary
components in our salvation. We
must receive Jesus as our Saviour
Junior bridesmaid was Miss April
Van Amersfoort of Blyth, niece of
the bride.
Best man was Rude deVries,
cousin of the groom from Wood-
stock. Ushers were Ben Dekker of
Chatham, friend of the groom and
Harvey Kikkert, friend of the
groom from Whitechurch. Junior
usher was Henry de Vries, brother
of the groom from Auburn.
Following the ceremony, a recep
tion was held at Clinton and
District Christian school gym.
The couple travelled to Ottawa
for their honeymoon and are now
residing north of Wingham for the
summer. This fall they will be
heading for Iowa to go to school.
with loving deeds. In Mark chapter
1 we find Jesus still healing many
people as the scripture says “that
night after the sun went down...’’
We could go on! On with
examples of Jesus’ self-forgetting
otherism, but if He is truly my
example, what about my self-for
getting otherism? Do I do for others
out of genuine love? Do I do my
good deeds to be seen of others,
and possibly to get in return? Do I
give off the top of my abundance,
or do I give ’til it hurts?
Does it matter who it is that
needs my help?
0 that we might see the world
through the eyes of Christ, and
respond with the purity and self
lessness of His motives.
Our text also says Jesus came
holy spirit moves upon our hearts
and restrains us from evil, inviting
us to do good and through our
actions, people will see that we
have a saving faith.
Jesus is the key, He will give us
strength to visit temptation. He
longs to have all of us, but the
choice is ours. At the close of the
message, Mr. Cowan sang a solo, a
hymn composed by Jim McCall
entitled “By the Sea of Galilee”
followed by benediction and choral
“Amen”.
Pat Nunn
goes back
to school
Reverend Pat Nunn of Brussels
conducted her final services at St.
John’s Anglican Church in Brus
sels and Trinity Anglican Church in
Blyth on Sunday, June 25.
Reverend Nunn has decided to
attend university for one year to
study history. She began her
studies at the University of Wes
tern Ontario in London on July 3.
Following the end of her year
there, she will decide whether she
wishes to return to the ministry or
teach within the church in some
other capacity.
Reverend Nunn was also pastor
of St. Mark’s Anglican Church in
Auburn until this past month when
it was demolished.
On September 1, Reverend

to earth
“to give His life a ransom for
many.”
The word ransom means the
price of release. It refers to a
payment to secure the release of
slaves or captives from bondage.
What does this all have to do with
me?
Human beings are under the
power of sin and death (Romans
5.12) “sin came into the world
because of what one man did, and
with sin came death, and this is
why all men must die, because all
men sinneth.”
People cannot free themselves
from the power of sin and death.
Only the shed blood of Christ on
Calvary’s cross - the ransom price
can do it for them.
Jesus Christ has done His part,
we must do ours by admitting to
God our sin, repenting from our sin
and receiving Christ into our hearts
as Savior, and Lord, believing that
He not only died for our sin but
rose again from the dead.
Salvation is a free gift and as a
gift can either be accepted or
rejected. May God help-you to
make your decision for Christ now.
Tomorrow may be too late.
