Sports Bats swing win for Auburn Great bales of fire A helper (in the foreground) tries to stamp out the licking flames that consumed Gerald Jefferson’s hay field at RR 2, Auburn, on Thursday. Bly th firemen in the background wanted to make sure the fire didn’t reach the bed of cedars behind the field. The fire is thought to have started from a bearing that fell out of a baler. About 17 round bales were destroyed. The Auburn Squirt Inter-town ship boys met Holmesville II on Tuesday, July 4 in Holmesville. Once again, the Auburn bats swung a hefty win for the team. Even being short six of their regular players and having to recruit a fan from the stands in order to field a team, the boys were still victorious 24 to three. Eric Andrew hit two home runs, one behing a grand slam. Marc Bricker hit a home run and a triple late in the game. Jonathan Collins also hit a triple. With some ‘heads up’ base running, the Auburn boys kept crossing the plate. The pitching staff of Jonathan Collins, Ryan Chamney and Eric Andrew had another hot game striking out nine batters. The boys are at home for their next two games on July 11 and 18 at 7 p.m. and then head out on an extended road trip for the rest of the season. They are also schedul ed to play in the Goderich Squirt Tournament July 21 and 22. Big bales burn in Donnybrook field NOTICE BY USA BOONSTOPPEL Fire swept through a dry hay field on Thursday afternoon de stroying about 17 freshly baled round bales at Gerald Jefferson’s farm at RR 2, Auburn. “Neither my son nor 1 were there when it happened,’’ said Mrs. Jefferson who was called by a neighbour who saw the smoke billowing behind their farm. The field was being baled by a custom worker, Bill Robinson, who had left to fix his broken baler. When he returned the field was in flames. He figured that a bearing flew out of the baler and ignited the dry hay. Blyth firemen arrived at the scene and distinguished the flames around the perimeter of the field. They left the round bales to bum. “The bales were no good anymore so we let them bum to get them out of the way,’’ said Paul Josling, Blyth Fire Chief. On route to the field, the pumper’s bumper got damaged when its driver failed to see a deep gulley in the field and plowed through it. Neighbouring farmers, weren’t on fire, pulled the stuck who arrived to move the bales that truck out. Londesboro Compiled by Mrs. June Fothergill.
