MacGowan receives extension for Callander plans
Continued from page 5
The most recent correspondence
from the Ministry, and the one
referred to in Ms. Mann’s letter,
asked that Mr. MacGowan state his
intentions to the Ministry by June
30, 1989. Following a meeting with
the committee, I requested and
received an extension of this date
to September 30, 1989.
I must reiterate here that the
issue of providing adequate facili
ties for long-term care is of the
utmost importance to me as your
MPP and to this government. To
this end, I have worked closely with
Health and with Community and
Social Services in an attempt to put
together a comprehensive plan of
action which will address the needs
of all areas of the county. The
concerns of all who have met with
me from the riding have been
reported to the two Ministries and
they are diligently working towards
a final plan of action.
The Ministries must make their
decisions on a province-wide basis
and as such, they are in the process
of looking at Huron County needs

the County, $87,500 will be direct
ed to the towns of Wingham,
Exeter, and Clinton. They will
receive the heavy equipment con
sisting of, such items as self-con
tained breathing apparatus, radios,
a rescue vehicle, and hydraulic
rescue equipment. The rest of the
fire detachments will receive the
basic kit.
MP for Huron-Bruce Murray
Cardiff presented a cheque in the
amount of $392,925 to the Ontario
Government to be directed to 17
communities across the province.
These funds will be directed to a
wide range of emergency prepared
ness projects, such as the purchase
of communications equipment,
emergency response vehicles, and
rescue equipment.
“This payment represents con
tinuing federal and provincial com
mitment to improving emergency
response capability in Ohtario.’’
said Mr. Cardiff. “For Clinton,
Exeter, and Wingham this means
new equipment which will help the
fire department in each community
provide better protection for people
living in the area.”
The JEPP enables the federal
government to contribute to or
undertake jointly with the provin
ces or territories emergency pre
paredness projects that enhance
the national response capability.
London hosts
folk festival
For three days, starting on July
14, the 16th annual Home County
Folk Festival will once again take
centre stage in Victoria Park,
London, Ontario.
Dating back to 1974, the festival
has entertained thousands of peo
ple with a blend of traditional and
contemporary music. In the past,
singers and songwriters such as
Valdy, the late Stan Rogers and
Nancy White have played at the
festival. This year you’ll again be
entertained by the best in both old
and new performers, all at no cost
to you. The Home County Folk
Festival remains one of the few
“free” festivals in the province.
The County Folk Festival opens
on Friday, July 14, at 6 p.m. in
Victoria Park, downtown London,
and continues until Sunday, July 16
ac 10 p.m.
along with those of other areas of
the province with respect to any
new allocations of beds. At the time
of writing of this letter, I under
stand there is a proposal before
Huron County council from the
Ministry of Community and Social
Services to realign the beds cur
rently at Huronview in Clinton in
order to better serve all areas of the
County. Once County Council has
reached a decision as to how the
realignment should proceed, the
Ministry of Health will be in a
better position to assess exactly
where beds are most needed.
I would also like to clarify the
point that “Fordwich ... was
awarded 17 beds ...” These beds
were awarded to Fordwich Village
Nursing Home as part of the
Compliance Plan Review Board bed
allocation, which at the time of
commitment had beds available to
assist nursing homes with a licens
ed capacity of less than 60 beds,
conditional upon the home being
brought into compliance with the
Ministry of Health standards.
I understand from the Ministry
that Mr. MacGowan’s intent at the
time of purchase in 1983 was the
amalgamation of the two homes,
which would have given him a total
of 64 beds, thus making him
ineligible for this type of allocation.
There have been no new beds
allocated by the province in recent
months.
At this time we are making plans
to arrange a meeting with repre
sentatives from both Health and
ComSoc for interested groups from
the riding to address this issue.
Once we have confirmed a date for
the meeting, it will be conveyed to
all concerned.
