Four bid farewell to Brussels PS MARGERYHUETHER Leaving Brussels Public after 16 years This year Brussels Public School is going to be losing some very familiar faces. Mrs. Idella Wilson and Mrs. Margery Huether are choosing this year to begin their retirement, while Miss Kim Blake and Mrs. Brussels Margriet Masson are transferring to other schools. Mrs. Wilson began teaching in Brussels 25 years ago. She remem bers Ken Ashton was principal when she started in 1964. What is really interesting about that is that Mr. Ashton was also her teacher when she was in Grade 8. Mrs. Wilson explains that in those days, most students all went through to Grade 13 because there “was nothing else to do’’. But, she said, after the war things changed very quickly. It wasn’t until 1963 that she attended Stratford Teacher’s Col lege. Until that time she worked in her mother’s hat store in Brussels. Mrs. Wilson began teaching after she had completed 10 Department of Education courses. These were offered at that time, she says, to improve teaching techniques and provide information on various subject areas. Her plans for the future are not set. “I have no immediate plans on retirement. I am looking forward to having the time just to relax and be free to come and go when the occasion arises,’’ she explains. Margery Huether has been at Brussels Public for 16 years. Since KIM BLAKE Fond memories of Brussels that time there have been several amusing incidents that she can remember. “Once when I was picking up a pupil from the late Margaret Tyreman’s class, we both laughed until we were in tears. The young ster came and put his arm around me, then looked into my eyes and remarked that he thought I was losing weight.” Another time she remembers her Continued on page 27 ENTER THE B. M. & G. A reader reports that it was so nice to have personalized service at the Swiss Chalet on Weber Street in Waterloo, recently. Charlene Stephenson, whose pleasant smile and manner are well known to Brussels residents from her days at Todd’s Bakery, is working at the chicken eatery for the summer. Charlene, who is the daughter of Fred and Sharon Stephenson, is beginning her second year in accounting at Wilfrid Laurier Uni versity in Waterloo in September. if FUNFEST "A Community Event for One & AH” DON'T MISS THE ANNUAL THURSDAY, JULY 6th Lions Monster Bingo - Arena Doors Open 6:30 p.m. $1,000.00 Jackpot Games Start 7:30 $3,000.00 in Prizes FRIDAY, JULY 7th Tri-County Oldtimers Games 7:00 p.m. 8:15 p.m. Flower Show - Arena Brussels vs. Bluevale Kurtzville vs. Moncrief MORE ON SATURDAY, JULY 8th 4:15 p.m. Jamestown vs. Brusselettes 5:30 p.m. Belmore vs. Kurtzville 6:45 p.m. Ethel vs. Bluevale 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Beef Barbecue By Brussels Optimist and Cardiff Catering Harold and Ada Thornton of Kitchener spent this past Sunday with Lawrence and Mildred Jacklin of John Street in Brussels. It would seem that some people in Brussels don’t have enough to keep them busy. Sometime be tween the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday, they decided to paint the town, or more precisely the arena. Vandals spray-painted the north and east wall of the arena in addition to six parking signs and two curve signs located nearby. Obsenities were painted on the parking lot. Wingham OPP Staff Sgt. John McKee said that at this time they have no leads but the investigation is continuing. Perhaps when the perpetrators are caught, someone can find something beneficial for them to do. 9:00 P.M.
