HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1989-06-21, Page 25Education pioneer dies in Clinton CELA ADELINE SLOMAN One of Huron County’s best known residents, Cela Sloman died suddenly at her home in Clinton on Friday, June 16, 1989. She was in her 93rd year. She and her husband Fred were famous for their work on the original school car in Northern Ontario and their story was told last year in “Fires in the Night” at the Blyth Festival. She was a member of the Order of Canada. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred; her brother and sister-in-law Elmer and Gladys Beacom and one granddaughter, Patti Jo Sloman. She leaves to mourn daughters Joan and her husband W. D. Reid of Oro Station; Dr. ‘Lizbeth and her husband Dr. Donald Hillman .of St. John’s, Nfld. and Kenya, Africa; Margaret at home; Fredda (Toby) Rainey of Brussels; and son Bill and his wife June of Davenport, Iowa. Also sadly missed by grand­ children Alison, Jamie, Dan, Alan, Elizabeth, D’Arcy, Andrew, Michael, Heather, Cindy, Richard and Melissa. The daughter of William and Annie (Beacom) Rathwell of Goderich Twp., Mrs. Sloman train­ ed as a teacher and taught kinder­ garten in Toronto before her marri­ age in Blyth to Fred Sloman on December 25, 1923. The following year the couple moved to Latchford to teach for two years, when Mr. Sloman was chosen as one of the first teachers in Ontario’s new experiment in education, the rail­ way Schools-on-Wheels in North­ ern Ontario. The Slomans remain­ ed with CNR School-on-Wheels 15089, operating between Capreol and Folyet in Sudbury District for the next 39 years, where Mr. Sloman became known as “the dean of School Car teachers”. The Slomans retired to Clinton in 1964, and in 1982 the Town of Clinton purchased CNR 15089, which now stands as a public museum and memorial to the family in Sloman Park. In 1982 Mrs. Sloman was awarded the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship and in 1984 was made a member of the Order of Canada for her dedication and courage to her husband’s side in bringing light and laughter into the darkness of a lonely land. Funeral arrangements were made by the Ball and Falconer Funeral Home, with Donald Slo­ man, Neil Elliott, and grandsons Jamie, Donnie and Alan Hillman and Michael Rainey serving as pallbearers. Interment was in Baird’s Cemetery, Goderich Twp., on Monday, June 19, 1989. Memorial donations to the CNR School-on-Wheels 15089, Box 488, Clinton, would be greatly appreci­ ated as expressions of sympathy. Obituaries. MARY EDNA GREIG Mary Edna Greig, the former Edna Rutledge, passed away at Orillia on Tuesday, June 6, 1989 in her 91st year. She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Brown of Orillia and a granddaughter, Lyn Keller of St. Thomas. One brother Alvin Rut­ ledge of Dutton also survives. She was predeceased by her son Ted McCreath, formerly of Walton and Brussels. She is remembered by the Rutledge family in Brussels. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 1989. PAGE 25. KENNETH A. BAKER Mr. Kenneth A. Baker passed away on Monday, June 12 at Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre in Owen Sound. He was 78 years of age. Formerly of Listowel and Ethel, he is survived by one nephew, John Baker and his wife Isabell of Fordwich and dear friend of Mrs. Viola Kaufman of Owen Sound. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Maude Baker and one brother, Thomas. A memorial service was heia tor him at the Robert Trench Funeral Home in Listowel on Wednesday, June 14 with Reverend Randy Jollife officiating. Interment fol­ lowed at the Elma Centre ceme­ tery. JACK WILLITS A longtime resident of Turnberry Township, where he farmed for many years, Jack MacLean Will­ itts, passed away at his home, Lory Street, Wroxeter, on Tuesday, May 30. He was 69. Jack Willitts was born in Tum- berry on Sept. 7, 1919, son of the late Webster Willitts and Ethel MacLean. He married the former Flora MacTavish in Fergus on April 14, 1951, and they farmed on Lot 2 of the ninth concession of Turn­ berry before retiring to Wroxeter in 1976. He is survived by his wife, and Lynne and Alan McColeman of Timmins, Norma and Michael Wildgen, RR 1, Dungannon and Ray and Shelly Willitts of Airdrie, Alberta. There are four grandchildren: Ashley and Jennifer McColeman and Curtis and Chandra Willitts and a brother, Ross Willitts of Ripley. He was predeceased by his sister, Edith Haugh, in 1988. Friends paid their respects at the McBurney Funeral Home, Wing­ ham, until Friday when service was conducted at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Larry Welch of Bluevale Presbyter­ ian Church where Jack was a member. Pallbearers were Ken Grant, Don Dosman, Mac Willitts, Alan Willitts, Bill Haasnoot and John Haasnoot. Flowerbearers were Norman Ross, Bill Ross and Wes­ ley Paulin. Interment at Wroxeter Cemetery followed the funeral service. In the Classifieds Business and_______ Professional Directory Henry F.
