Cut costs, improve service Clinton Hospital meeting told Improving services and cutting costs, was the challenge delivered to the Clinton Public Hospital directors at their annual meeting June 7. Mr. Al Jewson, chairman of CPH explained to the listeners that the Ministry of Health has asked them to cut costs, while expanding and improving the facility. “This is a challenge to the hospital,” stated Mr. Jewson. “We have to find innovative ways to provide health care in an acceptable manner and keep costs down.” He suggested that the public must be educated and made aware of the situation. CPH Administrator, Dan Steyn concurred with Mr. Jewson’s feel ings. He is confident that the hospital can meet the challenge stating, “I know our staff can handle it. We have an excellent staff.” Chief of Staff Dr. Brian Baker submitted a medical report in which he outlined some of the necessary changes. He requested upgrading in the chronic care area; specifically expansion and new equipment. The operating room needs improvements so that quali fied specialists and physicians will be attracted to the hospital. Also, he asked for a children’s ward as JI per cent of the hospital’s popula tion are children. Finally there is necessity for a day care, facility at CPH to relieve pressure on the operating room and medical staff. Other future needs include on going building maintenance, a second operating room, a new main entrance and the replacing of the x-ray equipment, according to Mr. Jewson’s report. More positively, the obstetrical ward has exceeded original expec tations by almost 30 per cent. Between 1988-89 there have been 185 babies born at CPH compared to the previous year when the number of births was 145. This was the first year of the new obstetrical wing’s operation and Mr. Steyn points out that it has far exceeded their expectations. “It reflects the goals we anticipated for two or three years hence.” The auditor’s report noted there, was an operating deficit of $20,344. Mr. Steyn said the deficit was nothing to be alarmed about and could be attributed to the higher influx of patients than anticipated. Statistics indicated that admis sions were up from 1,544 to 1,777 from the past year. This increased the total patient days from 12,894 to 14,457. However, the average duration of the stay dropped from 8.7 to 7.5 days. Deaths increased from 45 to 70. Operations increased from 905 to 945. There was an increase in laboratory tests of 16.5 per cent, while radiology, physio therapy and speech-language ther apy all noted a decrease in their departments of the number of patients treated. Marg Coventry, president of the auxiliary to CPH reported that their current membership stands at 120 volunteers. The volunteers have raised $50,000 for the hospital since 1894. Elected to the hospital board for this coming year are: Al Jewson, Clinton; Michael Falconer, Clinton; Bill Brand, Goderich Township; Deborah Armstrong Falconer, Tuckersmith Township and Steph en Thompson, Blyth.
