Society hears of waste plans The Auburn Horticulture Society met June 14 in the Community Hall with 24 members present. The President Maureen Bean conduct­ ed the business meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the Secretary Dorothy Grange and approved. The President reported on a meeting with the village trustees to discuss beautification of certain areas and the possible relocation of plantings for another year. A report on the clean-up and planting in Manchester Garden was given by Anne Vincent and thanks was expressed to the Au­ burn Co-op for their donation of plants. On a motion by Marion Haggitt and Shari Cartwright it was agreed to offer to host a future District 8 Executive meeting. There was also a motion by Joyce Bean and Laura May Chamney to invite guests for the September 13 meet­ ing when the Director of District 8 will be present. The guest speaker was introduc­ ed by Shannon McClinchey. Jo- Anne Richter Co-ordinator of Hur­ on County Waste Management Master Plan gave information on the setting up of a plan and its progress as it enters Phase 2 and emphasized the importance of planning for the vast amount of waste accumulation. Question and answer period followed. Joyce Bean gave a talk on composting and expressed its value as a method of re-using waste and the value to the land. She also explained methods of building up a compost heap within restricted areas. She had printed instructions available. There was also infor­ mation on where to send glass, tin, etc. Thanks was expressed to those taking part in the meeting and lunch was served by the committee in charge. WMS marks birthday NEILRODGER Neil Rodger, son of Joan and Bill Rodger of RR 1, Auburn, graduated from the Ridgetown Collegeof Agricultureand Tech­ nology on May 19, 1989 with a diplomain Livestock Production. Sunday School awards The monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Society was held on Tuesday evening at the home of Frances Clark and hosted by Carol Daer. The Devotional was taken by Viola Raithby on “Candles in a storm”. Frances Clark read an article on the Crieff Hills Commun­ ity and also gave a history of the Auburn W.M.S. It was June 1888, that the first Women’s Foreign Missionary Society was formed at Knox Presbyterian Church, Au­ burn. In 1914 the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society and the Wo­ men’s Home Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church United and have since been known as the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Society. A candle lit by Martha Daer and a special birthday cake cut by Viola Raithby were part of service commemorating these occasions. People the two for presented On June 11 the Sunday School Superintendent Margo Middel- kamp and the teachers presented the children with their attendance awards. The Nursery class members who received Bible Verse mugs were: Lisa Carter, Lisa MacDonald, Char­ lotte Worsell, Brett Bean, Justin Dobie. First year diplomas were presen­ ted to Michael Bean, Meagan Chamney, Amanda Young and Greg Young. The following children received seals for attendance: second year - Chris Millian, Leanne Vincent, Amy MacDonald, Justin Chamney and Danny Chamney; third year - Robbie Young and Josh Middel- kamp; fourth year - David Haggitt, Kevin Millian, Joel Arthur and Graham Worsell; fifth year - Courtney Rutledge, Pam Schneid­ er, David Campbell, Jason Rut­ ledge, Amanda Hanna and Melissa Hanna; sixth year - Rachel Arthur and Sheryl Ramsey; seventh year - Ben Craig, Bradley Ramsey, Tam­ my Middelkamp, Tracy Millian, Janice Marie Young and Annette Vincent; eighth year - John Arm­ strong, Michael Bakker and Laurel Campbell; ninth year - Scott Arth­ ur, Ryan Chamney, Peter Craig, Shelly Dobie and April Gross; tenth year - Michael Schneider, Tyler Craig, Ruth Anne Bakker, Kerry Bakker and Karen Millian; eleven­ th year - Janice Webster, Susan Dobie, Allison Chamney. Janice Marie Young was presented with replacement bibles and diplomas for her family. Danny Chamney received a Bible for regular attendance. Rev. Snihur presented Margo Middelkamp with a gift from the Sunday School in recognition of her dedication as superintendent. Auburn Scout receives Chief Scout Award June 24 will be a big day for a September, 1973 by His Excellen- number of Scouts from the Blue ' _ ~ Water Region as they will be receiving their Chief Scout’s Award Certificates. Hugh Robertson, Provincial Commissioner for Boy Scouts of Canada, will be presenting the certificates during a recognition ceremony at Wesley-Willis United Church, Clinton on June 24, 1989. The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. Doug Hancock, President of the Blue Water Region, announced recently that Michael Schneider of Auburn and Tyler McGregor of Clinton of the 1st Clinton Scout troop will be among the award recipients. The Chief Scout’s Award can be earned by any Scout who in the judgement of his fellow Scouts and his Scouters, exemplifies the prin­ ciples of Scouting through his leadership, his voluntary service to his community, and his outdoor skills. The award was inaugurated in cy, Governor General Roland Michener, C.C., C.M.M.C.D., in his capacity of Chief Scout of Canada. He had been greatly impressed by the many projects through which Scouts rendered service to others and helped to improve the natural environment, and he felt that such acts should be specially recognized.
