Tragic farm accident takes life of Bluevale-area man A well-known and respected Bluevale-area farmer lost his life in a tragic accident last Thursday. Oscar Kieffer, 70, of Lot 3, Con. 3 of Turnberry Township was pronounced dead just after 3 p.m. on June 8, reports a spokesman for the Wingham detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. According to the police, Mr. Kieffer and John Kennedy were cutting trees last Thursday after­ noon. Mr. Kieffer apparently drove his tractor into the path of a falling tree and was struck by the heavy branches. Oscar George Kieffer was bom Aug. 31, 1918 in Carrick Township, the second son of the late George Kieffer and Mary Cronin. He attended elementary school at SS No. 9, Carrick (Inglis’ School) and was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Teeswater. On June 1, 1940, he married the former Anna Marie Corrigan and they farmed at Holyrood for four years before moving to Turnberry Township, Concession 8, where they lived for 24 years. The farm was purchased from the estate of Oscar’s brother, William, who also was killed in a farm accident. In Business and_______ Professional Directory 1968, Oscar sold that farm to his son, William and moved to Lot 3, Concession 3, Tumberry. Mr. Kieffer was active in his church and community. He was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus, Council 7569, Father Pacquette, Wingham and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He served on the Sacred Heart School Board in Wingham, being instrumental in having the school established. In 1968, he was elected to the Huron-Perth Separate School Board and served for six years. He was president of the Howick Agri­ cultural Society in 1972 and 1973 and also served as a 4-H calf club leader. Surviving are his wife, Anna Marie and eight children: Marjorie and Lome Shupe of Surrey, B.C.; Rodger and Joan Kieffer, Hamil­ ton; Georgina and Reinhart Schrei- ter, Kitchener; Bill and Linda Kieffer, RR 1, Bluevale; Corinne and Michael Black, Belleville; Ron and Mary Kieffer, Wroxeter; Kar­ en and Ralph Weishar, Stratford; Elaine and Peter Groot, Hensall. There are 20 grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Roth, Kathleen Kief­ fer and Blanche Purcell and three brothers, Joseph, George and Mi­ chael. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, William and two infant sons, George and Ger­ ard. Visitation took place at The McBurney Funeral Home, Wing­ ham, on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Wingham, Obituaries WILLIAM ALBERT CLOSE Mr. William Albert Close passed away June 10, 1989 at Wingham and District Hospital. He was 95 years of age. Born in Grey Township, Mr. Close resided for many years in Ethel. He was living at the Callan­ der Nursing Home in Brussels prior to his death. Mr. Close was a member of the Canadian Foresters Court Woodbine 100. Left to mourn his passing are his nephews Bruce and Blake Tufford. Stan Soltysik officiating. Two grand­ children, Jason Kieffer and Kurt Schreiter, acted as mass servers. Honorary bearers were Norman Ross, Jack McBurney and Rae Breckenridge. Pallbearers were Jack Ross, Brian McBurney, Paul Elgie, Sean Kieffer, Roger Kieffer and Michael Kieffer. Carrying floral tributes were Michelle Kief­ fer. Krista Schreiter, Tammy Kief­ and William and two sisters Jessie and Annie. A memorial service was conduct­ ed on the evening of June 12 by the Canadian Foresters Court Wood­ bine 100 Cranbrook. Funeral services were held on June 13 at the Watts Funeral Home in Brussels at 2 p.m. Reverend B. Nevin officiated. Interment follow­ ed at Fairview Cemetery in Lis- towel. LILLIAN RUTH POTTER Miss Lillian Ruth Potter died Friday, June 2, 1989 at Wingham and District Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was in her 88th year. She studied at Queen’s University in Kingston and taught public school in Japan for three years. She also taught in several places in Canada. Miss Potter moved to Belgrave in the early 1970’s where she attended Trinity Anglican Church and was a member of the Institute there. She is survived by two brothers, Robert of Hamilton and Melimar of Beansville, and one sister Mrs. Elizabeth Coultes of Burlington. A memorial service was held for her in the afternoon Thursday, June 8 at the home of Mrs. Lena Seigars of Westfield. Reverend Douglas Zehr of the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship officiated.
