Phone 887-9250 Ethel people news Huronview costs overrun budget Huronview, after two sets of layoffs last year to reduce costs, is looking at a cost overrun again in 1989, Huron county council was told at its June 1 meeting. Wayne Lester, Huronview ad ministrator, couldn’t give the coun cillors exact figures as to how much the home for the aged would be over budget. He said there were a number of reasons for the overrun. The level of care is greater with people being admitted in frailer health, he said. In addition salary costs are larger than expected. Administration staff is working 35 hours a week instead of the 33.75 hours budgeted and they also received a five per cent increase. Shift premiums in the settlement for nurses weren’t budgeted for and the 1988 salary grid has nine levels instead of the previous seven. There could be further impact because of an arbitration case with another union which wants “considerably more than the county is prepared to give’’ (which is 5 per cent). In addition training under the WHIMS has been costly, he said. ***** In response to a question from Lossy Fuller, deputy-reeve of Exe ter, Mr. Lester said there has been no official response from the Mini stry of Community and Social Services to Huron county’s propo sal for a new Huronview with three sites, one at the current site, and satellite homes in the north and south of the county. Unofficially, Mr. Lester said, he knew that John Sweeney the mini ster in question, had read the proposal and that he had made a decision but the decision had not been announced. Warden Dave Johnston had written asking for a meeting with the minister to get answers. Both the Ministry’s Lon don office and the office of Jack Riddell M.P.P. for Huron had been contacted to find out why the decision hasn’t been made public. “We’re all frustrated by the horsing around and the delaying tactics’’, he said. “The minister knows what he wants to do. We’re going to press him for his deci sion.’’ ***** Permission was granted at the meeting for Brussels to close its main street (County Rd. 12) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 8 for Funfest. ***** Howick Mutual Insurance Com pany had notified the county roads department that it was interested in purchasing part of the property at the County garage in Wroxeter. Once the county’s new garage at the Highway 86 property is con structed it won’t be using the Wroxeter property any more. The company was notified that when the property is available, it will be given a chance to bid on it.***** After study, the Board of Health passed a resolution which says that Board supports County Council in its feeling that money from lotter ies in Ontario should continue to go for cultural and recreational needs. However, the Board says, if the province changes its policy so that all funds don’t go for that cause, the Board supports a resolution from the County of Peterborough calling for Lotto 6/49 funds to go to local health departments and other community-based initiatives for disease prevention and health pro motion programs.Jit**** In his report to the Agriculture and Property Committee Huron County Ag. Rep. Don Pullen noted in the 1988 Census Canada Report about farm operators with non farm income, 37 per cent of Huron farm operators had off-farm in come.***** H. Lancaster, Forest Manage ment Supervisor reported to the same committee that the district office of the Ministry of Natural Resources had planted 510,000 trees this spring, 300,000 of which were in Huron.
