Local couple celebrates 60th wedding anniversary Guest explains homemaking Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Stevens celebrated their 60th wedding anni­ versary at Huronview on Sunday, June 4, 1989. Family members attended a lovely luncheon for this occasion. Those present were: Robert and Margaret Stevens, Murray, Dar­ lene and Paul of London; Murray and Doris Crich of Hanover; Sandra and Jon of Guelph; Pat and Gump McMeekin and Karessa, Sharon and Pete Craig of Brampton; Ken and Marg Rogerson of Clinton; Ken and Leona McDonald; Rick and JoAnne McDonald, Lee Ann, Kelly Ann and Scott of Walton. The monthly Institute meeting Midget girls defeat Listowel The Midget girls have played a couple of games recently, one in Walton, June 1 with the home winning over the visitors, Listowel Africa topic at Brussels WMS The June meeting of Melville W.M.S. was held in the Church parlor with nine members answer­ ing the roll call with a verse containing the word “fruit”. Mrs. Helen Elliott the President opened the meeting by reading a poem “If you have a garden” and prayer. The treasurer’s report was given by Evelyn Mair. Margaret Patterson from Toronto is going to show slides on her trip to Africa on June 23 at 8 p.m. in Melville Church and all ladies of the community are invited. They resid­ ed in Seaforth, where Ernie worked at the Seaforth Creamery. They moved in 1947 to Walton to the present Jerry Ryan farm. In 1961 they moved to the former residence of Hugh Campbell where Ernie worked for McGavins until he retired. He enjoyed doing wood­ working and gardening around their home while living in Walton, residing in Huronview since 1986. Mrs. Stevens the former Alberta Nott, moved to the Blyth Queen’s Villa in 1987 where she still enjoys her quilting and playing cards with her friends. will meet that evening, June 21 in the Walton Hall. Members are reminded of the donation to Friend­ ship House in Goderich (paper products) when guests are invited to hear the guest speaker Julie Lee from Goderich. Helen Elliott. The scripture from John 17 was read by Isobel Gibson. The meditation on prayer was given by Ruth Martin. Hymns were sung with Helen Elliott at the piano. Margaret MacLeod led in prayer. Isabel Adams gave the topic on Africa: “The church struggles for its soul.” Helen Elliott gave a report of the May Presbyterial held in Ripley. The meeting closed with the Miz­ pah benediction. Tea and cookies were served by Margaret Mac­ Leod, Thelma Cardiff and Ruth Martin, and a social time enjoyed. Giving a hand and a heart is what the trained homemakers do through the Town and Country Homemakers, case manager Wen­ dy Herbert told Walton U.C.W. Wendy, who works out of the office in Wingham gave the mem­ bers a rundown of all the services they do through the home care program when she spoke to a group of ladies at the joint general meeting at the Walton Church, Wednesday evening. Marjorie Fraser for communica­ tions introduced the guest speaker and thanked her for all her informa­ tion and presented her with an envelope of money. Worship was led by Dorothy Sholdice with Audrey Hackwell giving prayer and Leona McDonald reading scripture lessons. Doreen Hackwell was pianist for the hyms. Offering was received and dedicat­ ed. Business was conducted by Olene Dennis with Marilyn Mc­ Donald reading minutes and cor­ respondence. Several items were discussed. Plans were made for the Country Supper at the Church, Sunday, June 18. Karen Hoegy asked for five people from each unit to clean the kitchen June 13. Each unit broke for their own business. Copper contest money received by leaders in Walton I unit were Judy Emmrich losing to Gloria Love’s Sons attend retirement tea Steven Huether, Toronto and John Huether, Guelph were home recently to attend the retirement party for their mother, Margery Huether. A social time and dinner were held following the tea. Guests attended from Royal Oak, Michi­ gan, Toronto, Clinton, Varna, Bay- field, Seaforth, Wingham, Listo­ wel, Brussels and Walton. Locals attend music festival Mrs. Mary Lou Johnston and Mrs. Margery Huether attended a Musical Recital recently at Bruce- field Centennial School. The more than 60 participants were pupils of Mrs. Marjorie Hayter of Varna. Mary Ellen Webster, a niece of Margery Huether is Mrs. Hayter’s pupil. There will be no meetings in July and August. Following Grace a social time was enjoyed during lunch served by Margery Huether, Ruth Tham­ er, Phyllis Mitchell, Kathleen Wil­ liamson and Marilyn McDonald. At this meeting plans were made for a miscellaneous shower for Tara McKelvie on Monday, June 19 at 8 p.m. in the basement of Walton United Church. Everyone is most welcome.
