Fire Chief Howard Bernard was given permission by Brussels Vil lage Council June 5 to purchase a compressor for the fire depart ment. Chief Bernard explained to coun cil that the department is having trouble keeping the air tanks, used to go inside burning buildings, filled with air. Currently the de partment purchases large tanks of compressed air and these are used to fill the six small back-packs used by the firemen. As the pressure in the large tanks drops, however, the fire department to pay for the amount of air that can be forced in the backpacks also drops, meaning firemen can stay inside a building for a shorter length of time. In addition it’s hard to get all the air out of the large tanks and there’s no credit given for the air left in the tanks when they’re returned. Clinton fire department had re cently purchased a new compressor at a cost of $12,000 but the Clinton Chief Fred Lobb had told Chief Bernard he felt a smaller compres sor costing only $8,000 would the job just as well. Council orders closing of pool parlour Following an order from Brussels Village Council the Sea-Hut Coral has removed its video arcade and pool tables. The order was delivered Tuesday of last week after village council decided the night before not to grant licences to operate the two facilities. Council made the deci sion after a delegation of 10 neighbours protested the noise that was coming from the business where the pool tables and video machines had been installed with out permission. The equipment had been removed by mid-week last WApl( Part of the expense of the compressor system is that it must purify all air before putting it into the tanks. The department is spending $700 to $800 for compressed air now and the firemen are not using the tanks as much as they should in practice because of the problems and expense of refilling the tanks. Clerk-Treasurer Hugh Hanly told councillors that they could use money from the reserve fund set aside for capital purchases for the Aye Matey...
