Melanie Knox swooped up three firsts at the Huron-Perth competi tion. She won the 100 metre sprint with a dash of 13 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 4.48 metres and the high jump with a soaring height of 1.46 metres. Melanie was also part of the 4 x 100 metre relay that placed first but was later disquali fied for an incorrect baton ex change. For Melanie the 100 metre time and the high jump height were personal bests and she tied the high jump record at the Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) which she attends. She also receiv ed a trophy for being the Midget girls overall champion. At the WOSSA competition, Melanie won medals in all her events. With a time of 13.4 seconds she snatched the bronze in the 100 metre, she flew over the 1.50 metre pole in high jump to place second and hit the sand at the 4.58 metre mark to place third in long jump. Melanie will advance to the OFSAA West Regional meet next Friday for all these events. Another star athlete from Goder ich high school, senior Maureen Stapleton placed first in all her events at the Huron-Perth meet. Maureen smashed the 1.09 minute 400 metre hurdle record with a time of 1.06 minutes, she then captured first in the 400 metre sprint with a time of 1.03 minutes. She sped to a first in the 800 metre race in 2.31 minutes, and helped her team mates win the 4 x 400 relay in 4.17 minutes and the 4 x 100 metre relay in 53 seconds. At the WOSSA tournament, Maureen grabbed a top five placing in three events to allow her to advance to the regionals. She dropped the 800-metre race on the advice of her coach because it was 40 minutes after her 400-metre hurdle race and she had four events to compete in. Maureen fought for the bronze in the 400 metre with a time of one minute flat, and she placed fourth in the 400 metre hurdles with a time of 1.07 minutes and her team’s 4.11 minute time in the 4 x 400 won them fourth. They didn’t place in the 4 x 100 metre relay. Former Blyth resident, Vivienne Stephens made an outstanding showing at both meets breaking three records. This speedy junior sprinter smashed the 100-metre record in a time of 12 seconds flat and the 200 metre record in 24.9 seconds. She then went on to WOSSA to destroy their 200 metre record in a repeat time of 24.9 JASONGROPP F.E. Madill Sports MAUREENSTAPLETON Goderich District Collegiate Institute seconds.
