Amateurs should read landscaping books for ideas There may be something to that song lyric about the other man’s grass being always greener. We’ve all marvelled at one time or another over a neighbour’s lawn and gar den and wondered what pains he has taken that we should. Perhaps he had help from a crack landscape engineer, or simply has a natural gift for gardening. For homeowners who either lack the funds to have someone else do it, or the finesse to do it them selves, here are a few tips. •An inexpensive book about flowers and shrubs will give ama teur landscapers an idea of what’s out there and how it will tie in with their particular property, says Shawn Marmer of Landscape Can ada. Preliminary homework will reduce the time needed for actual shopping and give you some idea of how to work within your budget. Most garden centres stock plants that will thrive in their particular region. In Canada, that means the emphasis is on the hardy rather than the exotic. •When buying trees or shrubs from a nursery, it is important to know that less mature means less expensive. Linda Sheely, a consul tant with Mother Nature Landscape Designs in Ottawa, says it is vital to make sure plants or shrubs have adequate space on either side. “Too often, homeowners forget to ask how big a plant will grow.’’ Good spacing of young shrubs and trees need not result in a sparse look for the first few seasons. The homeowner can plant perennials around the new growth for a fuller effect, and these can ‘ always be removed later. spring. Tulips and crocus are perennial favourites. Such ground covers as periwin- •Keep plants away from over hangs. These areas seldom receive any rain. “Use some attractive stone combinations as Sheely suggests. •To spruce up the walkway, plant annuals, perennials and flowering shrubs. These provide good colour and contrast with surrounding greenery. •If weeds are a persistent pro blem, 10 to 15 centimeters of mulch is an effective deterrent. The mulch also helps hold water. •Bulbs planted in the fall are an inexpensive source of colour in the filler,’’ kle can also brighten a yard. Ground covers spread and mat to gether as they grow. •Avoid planting deciduous trees near the swimming pool. The leaves will clog drains and make for a big mess to clean every year. •Keep in mind the root growth when choosing trees for pool, patio, driveway and walkway areas. The roots of some mature trees can crack or lift cement. THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER The saying goes, ‘‘The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. ” Well, not anymore!
