Chernobyl disaster brought boom to herb grower

Sanders grows in his greenhouse and garden. Although he does
sell fresh herbs to local restaurants, he makes a better living
selling medicinal herbs to health food stores

A cutting experience
On his home-made cutting machine, Mr. Sanders slices
home-grown and collected herbs for drying. Cutting the herbs
is a new practice for him. In Holland, herbs were sold fresh and
whole whereas in Canada,

The plant can only be picked for

One of the herbs he grew on a large
scale was coriander. Coriander is
usually grown in the Ukraine said
Mr. Sanders, but after the Cher
nobyl disaster nobody wanted it
from there anyone. Buyers started
looking for 5000 acres in Canada
and they came to us because the
year before we had grown four
acres for .i customer So Mr.
Sanders with the help of his sons
planted 100 acres of the herbs on
Mr. Sander’s old dairy farm in
Morris Township. Mr. Sanders
arranged the contracts while his
sons planted and harvested the
crop.
“It’s interesting how a disaster
can have this kind of effect on the
other side of the world,” he said.
