Auburn blossoms as society plants flowers Continued from page 17 With the smallest population of all three communities, Auburn has a solid horticultural society. With over 30 active members, its success is surprising in this little hamlet. “We’re a thriving group for a place this size,” said Dorothy Beautifying Auburn Doing a bit of gardening at the Manchester Park in Auburn is Maureen Bean, president of the Auburn Horticultural Society and treasurer, Dorothy Grange. Manchester Park isa blooming example of the society’s beautification in Auburn. Grange, secretary-treasurer of the society, “there are a lot of places larger than ours that have lost their horticulture societies.” We have no problems attracting the youth said Maureen Bean, president of the society, “the young ones really participate.” Mrs. Bean credits the societies success to the phone calls that are made to every member to remind them of the upcoming meetings. A program is also distributed to the members. “The program really helps because then members can see what is going on and come to the meeting if they are interested in the topic,” explained Mrs. Bean. One of the most visible achieve ments of the Auburn Horticultural Society are the concrete letters that spell ‘Auburn’ on both sides of town. They were set up in 1952. In 1958, the old Forester Hall on main street was donated to the Horticul tural Society who made it into Manchester Park, and a bicenten nial fountain was placed in the park in 1985. Other Horticultural beds in Au burn are at the hall where there are flower boxes, in the window and beds at the entrance to the play ground, the library bed where the bank used to be, another at the old county building and there are hanging baskets on various tele phone poles. In the past the society had flower shows and teas, but now they have a special trip once a year. This year, they plan to have a walk-a- about around the area to visit gardens of special interest and give encouragement to the gardeners. The societies’ next project in Auburn is to control the litter in the hamelt. Even so, Mrs. Bean says people like Auburn because “the village is kept neat and tidy.” Darryl Youngblut Plumbing & Heating High Efficiency Oil, Wood and Electric Furnaces 523-9383 or 523-9585 Middegaal SALES SERVICE CHEMICALS POOlCaMES- BULK LIQUID Get away from it all...In your own backyard POOLS, SPAS and PATIO FURNITURE COMPLETE LAWN & GARDEN EQUIPMENT...
