Worldly treasures The Sunday School classes and teachers of Melville Presbyterian Church in Brussels held a special service for Mother’s Day, entitled, “Friends Around the World’’. The teachers have made a banner for the church which reminds us that ‘We are all precious in his sight’. Having adopted a boy in Bangladesh the Melville Sunday School saw this as a furtherance of their consideration for those less fortunate. Hort. Society sponsors contest Majestic WI tours Hedley trout farm On May 10 the Majestic W.I. went on a tour of a trout farm at Dave Hedley’s. It was a very interesting and informative trip. Many of the ladies brought home trout caught by net and not by using a pole. After returning to the library the President Edna McLellan opened the meeting by reading a Mother’s Day poem. Twenty-two members were present. A display of the Brussels I 4H Knitting project was set up. Kathy Bridge gave a report on the district annual that was held on May 9 at the Presbyterian Church, Brussels. A motion was made to send in memorium for any present or past member. Marie Stute made a motion for the W.I. not to cater to any wedding anniversaries or birth­ days. Seconded by Kathy Bridge. An invitation to members to come to coffee and muffin held by the Morning Discussion Group to be held on May 24 at 10 a.m. Roll call “name a seafood that starts with your initial”. The Institute is to visit Goderich in July and have a picnic. In August the W.I. is to visit the Wingham Library. Discussion was held to have a float or something in the Fun Fest parade in July. Tickets are to be sold on a quilt at the Fun Fest. President Edna McLellan closed the meeting and sang Happy Birthday to members. Lunch was then served. The singing of “O Canada” opened the meeting. The secretary and treasurer’s reports were read and the roll call answered by a Spring poem. Judy Glen moved that the Soci­ ety have Mr. Clifton Apel spray the Horticultural park, seconded by Luella Mitchell. Business regard­ ing the Fun Fest to be held July 8, 9, and 10 was discussed. Tickets for a 50-50 draw will be sold and the Brussels People By Bonnie Gropp Phone 887-9114 or 523-4792 Decoys and dances, bands and balloons, horses and hats are all expected to be pan of the festivities planned for Brussels upcoming Fun Fest weekend scheduled for July 6, 7, 8, and 9. Several suggestions and propo­ sals were discussed at the May 3 Fun Fest general meeting and though attendance was not what people had hoped for, plans for the event are proceeding well. John Harrison of the Brussels Lions Club attended the meeting with an example of one of the thousand decoys that the Lions will be selling tickets on for their Duck Race down the Maitland. The committee hopes to be able to hire the Bayfield horse and carriage for the enjoyment of visitors during the weekend and Chris Lee of Walton is planning to set up a fountain at the dam complete with spotlight. Reverend Doug Zehr of the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship has agreed to conduct the Sunday morning outdoor service at the arena, and St. John’s Anglican Church will host a pork barbecue that evening. Brussels merchants hope to have the downtown area closed to traffic and the hotel is looking into the licensing for an outdoor pub com­ plete with live music. There will be a lace and trim booth for crafts and other articles Flower Basket competition will be open to everyone in the community with prizes of $20, $15, $10 and $5. Baskets are to be at the arena by 12 noon on Friday, July 9 ready for judging. Ruth Sauve and Jean Bewley have had the Guides and Brownies plant flower seeds with the results to be shown at the arena. Two of the members gave talks of interest to the society: Judy Glen on “Beautiful Lawns, Shrubs and Flowers” and “How to keep mois­ ture in the soil” and Luella Mitchell on “The 'growing of Amaryllis Bulbs” and “How to and souvenir hats will be sold. The next meeting will be held at the arena on June 1 at 8:00. Many more people are needed for input and assistance, so plan to attend or offer your help and make this first annual Brussels Fun Fest a suc­ cess. Congratulations to Reverend Doug Zehr and his wife Miriam on the safe arrival of their third daughter, Maria Joy. Former Brussels resident Paul Wilson and his bride-to-be Libby Kempton, were guests of honour at a ‘Jack and Jill’ hosted by Paul’s sister-in-law Sue Wilson, last Saturday. About 45 people were on hand to honour the couple. Guests came from as far away as Kingston, Keswick and Owen Sound. Others hailed from Oakville, Brampton, London, Lucknow, and Brussels. Paul and Libby, who reside in Brampton, will be united in marri­ age in that city on June 16, 1989, with Paul’s brother Greg and his wife Sue as their attendants. Paul is the son of Brussels Public School teacher Idella Wilson. A small family birthday party was held for new Brussels area resident Drew Thomas on Sunday. Two year old Drew, his parents Mike and Jamie, and his sisters Sam and Baylie are constructing a new home on John Street. The family has moved here from Oak­ ville and are presently renting a home a few miles out of town until theirs is completed. Brussels residents Jan Deitner of Flora Street and Sue Wilson of James Street are Mike’s sisters. A family bridal shower was held on Sunday at the home of Ivan and Betty Campbell in honour of their niece,Gwen Cousins. Guests atten­ ded from St. Thomas, London, Richmond Hill and Brussels. have a successful vegetable gar­ den.” Ruth Sauve won the door prize and proved a very efficient auctio­ neer in selling the plants brought by the members. New bulb books from Holland’s Glory were distri­ buted with orders to be in by July 1. Refreshments were served by the committee in charge, Alice Brothers, Muriel Garniss and Eluned McNair.
