Hymn 456 was sung and Mrs. Helen Elliott closed the service with prayer followed by the choral “Amen”. Rev. Ramirez’ sermon was en titled “Prayer”. Prayer is a gift from Jesus; it is God’s open line for communication, self expression and blessings. Many times we pray for material possessions and cures for our sickness, yet God would rather we pray for spiritual bless ings, strength to face illness and courage to go on in spite of our hurts. In John 17 Jesus prayed for his disciples that “though should keep them from evil”. He was concerned for his flock. Likewise we should pray for others in their hour of need and also for protection against evil thoughts and deeds individually as well as a church. Remember also, Rev. Ramirez said, to approach prayer humbly as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethse mane when he said “not what I will but thou wilt”. Let us concentrate more on our spiritual growth rather than our physical well being and remember we may obtain this blessing by reading God’s word and through prayer. The service closed with the singing of hymn “What a Friend we have in Jesus”. BY PASTOR BOB BARNHART BLYTH CHURCH OF GOD In a Bible study I was leading, we were studying the book of Genesis. We were in chapter 18. This is the chapter where Abraham was told that by this time next year he would have a son. Sarah was doing what is com monly called eavesdropping. Verse 10 says “Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent.” Sarah was inside the tent but was standing near the entrance and listening to the conversation. When she heard that she was going to be a mother at age 90 her reaction is recorded in verse 12. “So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘after I am worn out and my master is old will I now have this pleasure’.” The Lord then asked Abraham two questions. This is found in verses 13 and 14 where it says “Then the Lord said to Abraham why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘will I really have a child, now that I am old. Is anything too hard for the Lord’.” The first was a question that demanded an answer. The second was a rhetorical question. I want us to look at the second question, “Is anything too hard for the Lord”. What causes us to have a hard time believing that? One of the members of the Bible Study said “I think we try to figure it out and if we can’t come up with a solution we think there isn’t one.” I believe that is one pro blem: we want to understand and see the solution. The problem with that is that it doesn’t require Faith. Along this same line is that too often we look at circumstances and come to conclusions that are differ ent from God’s promise. Sarah looked at her circumstances which were that she was 90 and Abraham was 100. Looking at that it would be hard to understand how she could have a child. Looking at herself she would say it was impossible. We know from reading on that at that time the following year Sarah did have a child. Hebrews 11:11 says “By Faith Abraham even though he was past age and Sarah herself was barren; was enabled to become father because he considered him faithful who had made the pro mise.” BRAY-GOULET Mr. Robert Goulet, Pt. Clarke and Mrs. Barbara Graber, Brussels wish to announce the engagement of their sister, Michele Lynne to Steven Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Bray, RR 2, Bluevale. Wedding to take place May 20, 1989 at St. John’s Anglican Church, Brussels, Ontario. Reception, Brussels Legion. God keeps his promises. When we face problems we need to look to the Lord in Faith. What does that mean. It means believing there is a solution even if we can’t see it or understand it. We also need to look at God’s power rather than our circumstances. God is greater than circumstance; no matter how im possible it seems. When we have faith it pleases God and really this is the only way to please him. Hebrews 11:6 says: “and without faith it is impossible to please God. We have a choice either we can exercise faith or we can laugh. Don and Marilyn McDonald of RR 2, Brussels are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jeanne Elizabeth to Robert John Dionne, son of Bill and Joyce Dionne of Oshawa.
