Lisa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pennington of Brussels was introduced by her grandfather, Brussels Reeve Gordon Workman. By Bonnie (Jropp Phone 887-9114 or 523-4792 Well, it would seem that roller skating in Brussels is really catch ing on but, as a mother with two small children participating in the sport I have several concerns I would like to address. Many years ago when roller skating was in vogue, there were rules and regulations that were followed if you wanted to be permitted on the rink. It was customary for the beginners to circulate in the inside of the skating area, while those more practised moved around them. Racing and tag were definitely not allowed and anyone rough-housing was repri manded, then evicted if they continued. Cruisers were hired to remind people of the rules and keep them from stopping along the boards or standing still in the centre of the rink. Skaters were advised to keep moving and not cut corners while THAT'S HOW MANY CANADIANS ARE CURLERS skating. The youngsters in Brussels have not been given any rules to follow, and even if they were there is no one enforcing them. One accom plished roller-skater has been do ing his best to assist those who have fallen, by blowing a whistle to alert others, but he has no first-aid experience nor is he in a position to single handedly control everyone skating. There has already been one mishap with a young girl breaking her foot and I am certain if some control is not gained there will be many more. There are a lot of tiny, new skaters mixed in with older, aggressive ones and I fear there may be some serious injuries. Perhaps we could look at special times for different age groups or different levels of expertise. It is really nice to see a new activity for families in Brussels to enjoy and it would be too bad to see anything, like an accident, spoil it.♦***♦ Mrs. Sue Wilson has been elected to the Board of Directors for Mapletone Sweet Adelines. Sue was installed at a ceremony on Tuesday evening. Barbara Brown was the guest of honour at an early surprise birth day party held at her mother’s home in Georgetown. Mrs. Brown’s daughters, Janice, Allison, Christine and her son Jeffrey planned the event. Jeffrey Brown left May 2 for a one and a half year stay in Japan. Jeffrey has just completed his studies at the University of Wes tern Ontario in London. Mr. and Mrs. John Hoover and daughter Laural visited with his mother Mrs. Retta Hoover on the weekend. Brussels is fortunate to have residents who have lived here all their lives, and can remember events of earlier days. Frank Thompson’s store is a good spot to hear about them, particularly if Jim Smith is in visiting. Buggies had just start ed to run on the old sleigh tracks, and a wedding was planned for April 17. The bride was Miss Florence Bremner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bremner of Grey Township, and the groom, Mr. Albert Cardiff. Mr. Harold Cardiff was best man, and Miss Isabel Bremner the attendant. Miss Eliza beth Smith was the organist. The wedding was held at the bride’s home. Following the service and reception the couple took the afternoon train from Ethel for their wedding trip. The Bremner, Car diff and Smith families are still very much a part of our community.
