The report showed that after putting $15,244 into reserves the council still has $36,013 in surplus funds compared to $52,351 going into the year. The biggest money-loser for the village was the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Board which lost $9,429 for the year on top of a deficit of $3,442 coming into the year for an accumulated deficit of $12,866. Operations of the Brussels Cemetery showed a surplus of $10,554 more than offsetting the deficit of $2,001 coming into the year for an accumulated surplus of $8,553. The Medical-Dental Centre fin ished 1988 with a surplus of $3,117. After starting the year with an accumulated deficit of $6,146 it leaves an accumulated $3,029 de ficit at year end. The Waterworks department be gan the year with a $13,317 deficit but built up a $3,591 surplus for 1988 to leave an accumulated deficit at year end of $9,726. The Hydro Commission showed net earnings for 1988 of $32,242 which when put with the $178,489 utility equity at the beginning of the year adds up to a total equity of $210,731 at year end. In total the village spent $651,795 in 1988, not including money collected by the village but turned over to school boards and the county level. Further evidence of the village’s strong position was shown in the six-year financial review contained in the report prepared by Pannell Kerr MacGillivray which showed that in 1988 taxes in arrears amounted to only six per cent of the total. By comparison in 1983 the amount of 17 per cent of all taxes while the amount remained at 16 per cent as late as 1986. Assess ment in the village totalled $18.48 million last year, the first year in which marketvalue assessment was in place for all taxes. ‘GRASS SEEDS ‘SEED CORN ‘LAWN SEED Call your Pickseed representative today - Neil Gowing Brussels 887-6292 EASY COME EASY GO BLYTH - 523-4792 OR BRUSSELS - 887-9114 HAS New Roper 5 HP Rear Tine Tiller with counter-rotating I Briggs & Stratton engine H \jl Power reverse 1I [ I 12” tines/17” till path I 4^ I 7-position depth stake If Adjustable handles I 1I Safety stop/start I 11 • 2-year limited warranty j L I X FARM EQUIPMENT LIMITED 8999® FAX Yes, a complete Facsimile Transfer Service is now available through The Citizen newspaper.
