Lodge honours Fred Thuell COLLEEN ROBERTSON Colleen Robertson of RR 2, Bluevale passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 9, 1989 at University Hospital, London, Ont. at 53 years of age. The former Colleen Gertrude Stobo, she was born on July 24, 1935 in Wingham. She was the eldest daughter of the late Robert and Gertrude Stobo of RR 2, Teeswater. Colleen attended Teeswater Con­ tinuation School and Wingham and District High School. Following graduation she attended Summer School in Toronto for two years. Colleen began her teaching car­ eer in 1952 at the age of 17 on concession 10 of Carrick Twp. where she taught for two years. She attended Stratford Normal School and returned to teaching at Obituaries Brussels teacher. church worker. historian dies hazel Margaret stewart MATHESON Hazel Margaret Stewart Mathe­ son passed away suddenly on April 13, 1989 at the home of her daughter in Seaforth. Bom in Langdon, North Dakota in 1901, she came to Brussels in 1906 with her family. She attended Brussels Public and Continuation Schools and Toronto Normal School. A school teacher in Galt for five years, she opened the first Kindergarten in Brussels in 1960. She is fondly remembered by many students and teachers she was associated with from 1960 to 1966. Married for 55 years to David Clarke Matheson (1895 - 1983), they were the parents of Murray of Bayfield, Jean and her husband Murray Ross of Seaforth and Ian and his wife Pat of Agincourt, the grandparents of Heather, Sandra, Alan, Kimberley, David and Mari­ anne, and the great-grandparents of Greg and Jody. One of seven children of Peter and Mary Stewart, Hazel is surviv­ ed by her sister Mrs. Jean Heming­ way of Don Mills. She was prede­ ceased by brothers Roy, Archie, Graham, Stewart Lowe and sister Florence McGavin. Hazel was a life-long and dedi­ cated member of Melville Presby­ terian Church, where she taught Sunday School and the Mission Band, and was a member of the Choir, Ladies Aid and W.M.S.. She was presented with an honorary membership in the W.M.S. in 1983. Her knowledge and interest in the community resulted in much valued local history and informa­ tion being shared with one and all. She was honoured with a Volunteer Service Award from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Culture in 1984. Friends and relatives were re­ ceived at the M. L. Watts Funeral Home on Friday and Saturday. The funeral service was held from Melville Church on Sunday after­ noon. The Rev. Paul Chambers officiated. Pallbearers were Tom Pletch, nephews Doug Lowe, Doug Stewart, Peter Stewart and grand­ sons, Alan and David Matheson. Hazel will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great­ grandmother, sister, community member, local historian and friend. “Death isn’t an end, it’s the beginning of a fuller life.” A good attendance of members and visitors was present at the regular meeting of St. Johns Lodge in March. A degree team from Northern Light Lodge in Kincar­ dine were present and confered the 2nd Degree. V. Wor. Bro. Fred Thuell was called up on and was presented with his 50-year jewel in recogni­ tion of his 50 years in the Masonic Order, by Rt. Wor. Bro. Bruce McCall and Rt. Wor. Bro. Donald Dunbar. Numerous visitors and members extended their best wish­ es and congratulations to Fred, who is also an active member of Lebanon Chapter R.A.M. in Wing­ ham, the Blue Water Shrine Club and the Scottish Rite, He is also an avid horse racing fan. In 1962, Colleen took a leave of absence to have her family. When she returned to teaching, it was to Turnberry Central School where she taught for two years. In 1968 Colleen resumed teach­ ing Grade 1 and Kindergarten at Wingham Public School where she has taught for the last 21 years. Teaching school was a labour of love for Colleen and her goal was to make her classroom a happy place for her students to begin their educational journey. Those who miss Colleen most are her husband William Robertson, whom she married on August 23, 1958 in Teeswater Presbyterian Church; their children Sherry and Charlie Young of Belmont, Jacquie and Kevin Bishop of Seaforth and a very special granddaughter, Keshia Bishop. Also missed dearly by Margaret Robertson of Wingham, Colleen’s mother-in-law; Colleen’s brothers and sisters Gloria and Donald Dow of RR 3, Wingham; Lloye and Stewart Wathke of RR 2, Desboro; Donald and Elizabeth Stobo of RR 2, Teeswater; David and Donna Stobo of Teeswater; Bruce and Lois Robertson of Gorrie and several special nieces and nephews. Friends paid their respects to the family on Monday afternoon and evening at the McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham. The funeral ser­ vice was conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Wingham by her minister Rev. Larry Welch of Knox Presbyterian in Bluevale and assisted by Rev. John Vaudry, St. Andrews Presbyterian, Wingham. Special hymns were sung includ­ ing one of Colleen’s favourites, “The Lord Is My Shepherd”, “A Teacher’s Prayer” and “All I Ever Needed to Know I learned in Kindergarten” were read as part of the service. Pallbearers were Bruce Darling, Ken McKague, Donald Murray, Glen Schwartzentruber, Lewis Stonehouse, Carl Johnston, Mur­ ray Johnston and Fred Martin. Flower bearers were Dawn Dow, Marion Wathke, Scott Stobo, Linda Stobo and David Robertson, all nieces and nephews of Colleen. Colleen’s final resting place is the Wingham Cemetery.
