Morris council to replace hospital representative At their April meeting Morris township councillors agreed to put into effect a by-law that would authorize the Wingham Fire Area Board to enter into an agreement with the Listowel Fire Department for fighting fires in the Townships of Howick and Wallace. It was moved by Wayne Riley and secon­ ded by Clem McLellan that By-law No. 5-1989 be passed as given first, second, third and final readings. Council concurred. The resignation of Shirley Gar- niss as Morris Township’s repre­ sentative on the Wingham Hospital Board was accepted with regret. Ms. Garniss’ resignation becomes effective June, 1989 and Council has decided to advertise for a replacement. A letter of thanks will be forwarded to Ms. Garniss in appreciation of her service. The by-law authorizing Council to Sign and execute the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Agree­ ment was passed. A sum of $8,000 has been granted from Morris Township to the Recreation Com­ mittee. The Township will be split in half at centre sideroad for the Com­ munity Based Policing Program. Constable Ricker will be in charge of the east side while Constable Alexander will be in charge of the west. Council supports the propo­ sal and will be contacting represen­ tatives for the committee. Morris Township will be receiv­ ing approximately 75 trees from the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to plant along the road side. The trees will be available in April, 1989 and Council will adver­ tise for those wanting to plant them. Arteeka Canine Control, who have presently been acting as dog control for the Township, present- Goderich nursery gets $320,000 grant The Goderich Municipal Day Nursery will receive a provincial funding in the amount of $320,000, MPP for Huron, Jack Riddell announced last Friday. The pro­ gram will expand to include 60 spaces for children ranging in age from two to five years. Due to its amalgamation with Little Kids Corner Day Care Centre it will also expand from half a day to a full day. The announcement was made on behalf of John Sweeney, Mini­ ster of Community and Social Services. The Goderich Nursery will re­ ceive a capital grant of $150,000 for construction and renovation costs, according to Mr. Riddell and start-up funding of $50,000 will be given to cover initial staffing and operating costs, as well as toys and equipment. An amount of $120,000 will provide for 30 or more new subsidized spaces. “This program will provide qua­ lity care for children in an active and caring environment,’’ said Mr. Riddell. “It will play a significant part in meeting the child care needs of working parents in the Goderich area.’’ It is expected that the expansion will be completed by mid-summer. The ministry’s paper, “New Directions for Child Care’’ outlines funding for the expansion of exist­ ing child care programs and the establishing of new programs.
