Morris council to replace hospital representative
At their April meeting Morris
township councillors agreed to put
into effect a by-law that would
authorize the Wingham Fire Area
Board to enter into an agreement
with the Listowel Fire Department
for fighting fires in the Townships
of Howick and Wallace. It was
moved by Wayne Riley and secon
ded by Clem McLellan that By-law
No. 5-1989 be passed as given first,
second, third and final readings.
Council concurred.
The resignation of Shirley Gar-
niss as Morris Township’s repre
sentative on the Wingham Hospital
Board was accepted with regret.
Ms. Garniss’ resignation becomes
effective June, 1989 and Council
has decided to advertise for a
replacement. A letter of thanks will
be forwarded to Ms. Garniss in
appreciation of her service.
The by-law authorizing Council
to Sign and execute the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Recreation Agree
ment was passed. A sum of $8,000
has been granted from Morris
Township to the Recreation Com
mittee.
The Township will be split in half
at centre sideroad for the Com
munity Based Policing Program.
Constable Ricker will be in charge
of the east side while Constable
Alexander will be in charge of the
west. Council supports the propo
sal and will be contacting represen
tatives for the committee.
Morris Township will be receiv
ing approximately 75 trees from the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority to plant along the road
side. The trees will be available in
April, 1989 and Council will adver
tise for those wanting to plant
them.

grant
The Goderich Municipal Day
Nursery will receive a provincial
funding in the amount of $320,000,
MPP for Huron, Jack Riddell
announced last Friday. The pro
gram will expand to include 60
spaces for children ranging in age
from two to five years. Due to its
amalgamation with Little Kids
Corner Day Care Centre it will also
expand from half a day to a full
day. The announcement was made
on behalf of John Sweeney, Mini
ster of Community and Social
Services.
The Goderich Nursery will re
ceive a capital grant of $150,000 for
construction and renovation costs,
according to Mr. Riddell and
start-up funding of $50,000 will be
given to cover initial staffing and
operating costs, as well as toys and
equipment. An amount of $120,000
will provide for 30 or more new
subsidized spaces.
“This program will provide qua
lity care for children in an active
and caring environment,’’ said Mr.
Riddell. “It will play a significant
part in meeting the child care
needs of working parents in the
Goderich area.’’
It is expected that the expansion
will be completed by mid-summer.
The ministry’s paper, “New
Directions for Child Care’’ outlines
funding for the expansion of exist
ing child care programs and the
establishing of new programs. The
total expenditure on child care by
the Ministry will reach $325 million
this year compared with $88 million
in 1985.

Council decided that they have
no objections to the application
from Clarence Yuill for a licensed
gravel pit on the south half of South
half Lot 15, Concession 4 in the
Township of Morris.
A request from Clair Langlois of
Lot 12, Concession 8 for a speed
limit sign to be placed at the east
side of his driveway, in order to
slow traffic was presented to
Council. Council advised the road
superintendent not to place the
sign as there are several other
situations of the same nature in
Morris Township. Building permits
were issued to Jack Van Camp for a
duplex in Belgrave and Gerald
Beck for a new residence at Lot 4,
Concession 5.
