Emily Philips introduced the guest speaker for the evening Mrs. Peggie Geddes, wife of the chap lain of Bluewater Centre, Goderich, Peggie has spent 14 years as missionary in Jamaica and is presently involved in “Operation Friendship” an outreach center in Toronto. The theme of her message was “Building Bridges”. Her mini stry at Jane Finch corridor encom passes thousands of immigrants including many teenagers from the West Indies. Many of these people have never ventured outside the city and their problems are numerous. This mini stry teaches new techniques to young mothers, many of them single parents, holds speech class es, teaches job training and pro vides food distribution. There are also recreation programs, sports programs and camping excursions outside the city for teenagers. Being involved in such a program Peggy’s jobs are many but she stressed her most important role was being a friend. Such programs, made possible through our Mission and Service gifts, allow young people to stretch their goals, teach the gospel and provide an alterna tive to the streets. She closed her message by asking “How can we build bridges of friendship and caring?” She 4 urged everyone to continue to try and reach those who need help whether it be in this community of Blyth or Toronto or wherever - to go forth as Jesus did. June Peck, President of the U.C.W. thanked Peggy for her most informative talk and an nounced the benediction. Lunch was served by the ladies of the Evening Unit.
