Belgrave Tykes win tournament 'B' title Tyler Stewart slides out to make a save of a Clinton forward during the opening game of the Huron-Perth Houseieague Tyke tournament in Blyth Friday. Clinton edged Blyth 5-4 in an exciting finish. Belgrave Tykes won the consola­ tion championship at the wrapup tournament for the Houseleague on the weekend in Blyth. In the first game Belgrave took on the strong Goderich team Friday night playing well to lose by a 6-2 count. Peter Irwin scored both Belgrave goals. Saturday the team moved into the “B” division and picked up a 4-0 win over Blyth. Peter Irwin started the scoring with an unassis­ ted goal in the first period. Justin Campbell scored from Steven Mc- Burney and Rob McGee before the first period ended, then added another from Rob McGee in the second to stretch the lead. Peter Irwin scored again in the third period. In the championship game it took double overtime for Belgrave to win the game. Peter Irwin gave Belgrave the early lead in the first but Bayfield scored twice to take the lead before the period ended. After a scoreless second period, Peter Irwin scored seconds into the third to tie the game. After a three-minute overtime period the teams were required to pull their goaltenders for the second over­ time and Brian Sinclair carried the puck out of his own end, all the way down the ice to score into the empty net, giving Belgrave the “B” championship for an exciting end to the season. For Your FERTILIZER and CHEMICAL needs Blyth hosts tournaments Friday, Mar. 31, saw the start of the playoffs for the Houseleague hockey system. The playoffs are held in a tournament format. The Tyke and Atom games were played in Blyth, while the Novice and PeeWee’s were played in Clinton. The Atom side of the tournament started with Clinton playing Brus­ sels. Clinton opened the scoring with Jason Clark setting up Rick Cook. Brussels then replied with three of their own goals. Gene Johnston unassisted; Shane Wilson from Tom Pearson and Shawn Johnston and Shawn Johnston unassisted. Clinton tied the score later in the third period with unassisted goals by Kevin MacKay and Jason Bell. In sudden death overtime Shawn Johnston scored .for Brussels, assisted by Gene Johnston, the final score was Brussels 4, Clinton 3. Blyth met Bayfield in game two. Jacob Cayer opened the scoring for Bayfield unassisted. David Scott assisted by Sam Gundy closed the scoring for Bayfield. Blyth was unable to score a goal. Final score Bayfield 3, Blyth 0. The third game saw Hensall playing Goderich. Ray Beigerling scored two goals and three assists for HensaL. Greg Keyes scored twice, Ryan Imanse scored once and had one assist, Dan Taylor had a goal and an assist and Chris McClinchey bad a goal and an assist. Single goals went to Ryan Kyle, Chris Taylor, Jason Camp­ bell and Jeff Moir. Blair Moir received two assists and Rob Hopkins one assist. The final score was Hensall 11, Goderich 0. In game 4, Belgrave versus Huron Park, Andy Glavin opened the scoring for Huron Park assisted by Tyler Todd. Belgrave then scored twice, Aaron Coultes and Brent Robinson with an assist op both goals to Corey Moran. Final score Belgrave 2, Huron Park 1. In game 5, Belgrave versus Hensall, Hensall opened the scor­ ing with Jeff Moir and Chris McClinchey setting up Blair Moir. Belgrave’s Brent Robinson scored unassisted to tie the game. With six seconds left Hensall got the go ahead goal by Dan Taylor assisted by Blair Moir and Ray Beierling which gave Hensall the win. Final score Hensall 2, Belgrave 1. In game 6, Goderich versus Huron Park, Huron Park opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by Pres Lavier. Goderich then scored three quick goals. Jeremy Demers assisted by Sean McDade; Leo Courtney assisted by Steve Hamilton and J.C. Kirk, and Sean McDade assisted by Brad Jones. Huron Park Pres Lavier closed the scoring on an unassisted effort. Final score Goderich 3, Huron Park 2. Game 7 was to be between Brussels and Bayfield. Brussels forfeited the game because they didn’t have enough players after three of the Brussels players were declared ineligible to play by the tournament convenor and the Houseleague convenor. Bayfield won by forfeit. Game 8 saw Blyth face-off against Clinton. Rick Cook and Jason Heipel scored unassisted for Clinton. Jason Heipel then scored assisted by Kevin MacKay. Jason Heipel completed his hat-trick with assists by Rick Cook and Joe Boland. Chris Stewart scored Blyth’s lone goal assisted by Jason McDougall. Clinton’s Derrick Wise closed the scoring assisted by Todd Shaddick. Final score Clinton 5, Blyth 1. Both final games were fast, hard fought hockey games. Goderich won the “B” championship by downing Clinton 3-2. Hensall outscored Bayfield 4-1 to take the “A” championship. Un­ fortunately the score sheets were misplaced so we can’t say who scored and assisted. Trophies were presented to the “A” champs, “A” finalists and “B” champs. All other participants received crests. In the tyke games it was: Clinton, 5, Blyth, 4; Goderich, 6, Belgrave, 2; Hensall, 6, Bayfield, 0; Huron Park, 16, Zurich, 0; Hensall, 6, Huron Park, 4; Bay­ field, 2, Zurich, 0; Belgrave, 4, Blyth, 0; Goderich, 16, Clinton, 0; Belgrave “B” Champs, Bayfield, 2, Belgrave, 3 O.T.; Hensall “A” Champs, Hensall, 4, Goderich 3, O.T. Trophies were presented to the “B” Champs, “A” Finalists and “A” Champs. Crests were presen­ ted to all other teams participating in this tournament.r Belgrave Novices edged for 'B' championship Belgrave novices lost in the “B” championship game at the house­ league tournament held in Clinton on the weekend. In the tournament’s opening game Saturday, a strong game by Tom Pfieffer in goal wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-0 loss to Huron Park. Two third period goals gave Huron Park the victory. On Sunday the team played Bayfield in the second round, scoring a 2-1 overtime victory. Bayfield took a lead in the first period and held it until Ryan Cook. with an assist from Peter Irwin, finally got Belgrave on the board with just 1:31 left in the game. In overtime it was Wayne Fenton scoring from David Piluke for the win in the second overtime period. In the “B” championship Bel­ grave seemed to run out of steam against the hometown Clinton squad as they fell 4-0. Jason Curtis played his first game of the year in net for Belgrave in this, the team’s last game of the year.
