Sports Ladies Curling Club holds fun day BlythAtoms win groupchampionship BY RUSTY BLADES last 4-2a strong thein Blyth open a close The Blyth Atoms capped a successful season last week as they defeated Huron Park 6-2 in Blyth on Wednesday and won the group championship in Huron Park Friday night with victory. Last Wednesday home team broke checking game with four unan­ swered third period goals on their way to a 6-2 win. Henry Bos opened the scoring as he finished off a three-way passing play with linemates Christopher Howson and Ryan Chamney. Henry gave Blyth a 2-1 lead early in the second as he was sent in on a breakaway by Christopher How- son. Huron Park tied the game but Blyth pulled away in the third. Ryan Chamney scored the win­ ner with a short-handed tally in the first minute of the third with an assist from Henry Bos. Brian McNichol gave Blyth the breathing room they needed as he scored two quick goals. Jason Rutledge assist­ ed on both goals and Scott Arthur added one assist. Henry Bos com­ pleted the scoring late in the game as he counted the hat-trick with a power- ’ ’ ' ' J 1 " Chamney. This 6-2 win sent Blyth to Huron Park on Friday night hoping for a solid effort to end the season. It was fire on ice as the team built an insurmountable 3-0 first period lead on their way to a 4-2 cham­ pionship win. Jason Rutledge and Scott Arthur assisted on Brian McNichol’s howitzer from the slot to give Blyth a 1-0 lead. Christo­ pher Howson and Ryan Chamney then set up Henry Bos in the slot and Henry whipped the puck through the five-hole for a 2-0 lead. Huron Park scored the only goal of the second period but Jason Rutledge scored the clincher early in period three. Brian McNichol and Scott Arthur assisted on Ja­ son’s backhand shot that eluded the opposition goalie. The ladies travelled to Seaforth where they curled two six-end games with the Seaforth Ladies serving a delicious meal at noon. This was followed by a short meeting. President Fran Bremner opened the meeting followed by Secretary- Treasurer, Sharon Cowman read­ ing the minutes and giving the treasurer’s report. It was announc­ ed that the team of Nora Stephen­ son, Jean Bewley, Evelyn Blake and Brenda Cucksey were the winners of the Waiter Scott Me­ morial Trophy. trophy to end a satisfying season. Brad Anderson, Rob Johnston, Tim Cowan and Jonathan Collins played outstanding defence throughout the game while goal­ tenders Chris Lee and Michael de Jong made some timely saves to keep the score in Blyth’s favour. This ends another season of hockey in Blyth and the Atoms finished with a record of 31 wins, 13 losses and two ties. They scored 247 goals and only allowed 151 goals. They won the Zurich Atom tournament, were runners-up at the Seaforth Atom tournament and were WOAA group champions. Belgrave Novices lose at tournament Belgrave Novices took part in the Blyth Lions Little Lions tournament March 26. The team was no match for the Blyth “A” and Brussels “A” teams in the first two rounds, dropping 10-0 and 9-0 decisions. The third game of the tourna­ ment however against Blyth “B” turned out to be an exciting game. Blyth took a lead in the first period but Ryan Cook scored to tie the game. Ryan then gave Belgrave the lead in the second but Blyth came back to tie the score. In the third Blyth took the lead but Ryan Cook again tied the score. The teams went into overtime but Blyth scored to take the game 4-3.
