Strong economy cuts Huron's welfare costs The good economic times contin ue to save Huron County taxpayers money in welfare costs, John MacKinnon, Administrator of So cial Services told county council March 9. The Social Services department was $152,616 under budget for 1988, resulting in a saving of $42,954 for the county (the rest was to have been provincial govern ment money.) Being under budget was a result of the strong economy in the area, Mr. MacKinnon told council. So far, he said, the trend had contin ued into the first two years of 1989. He was questioned by Exeter Reeve Bill Mickle as to why, with last year being well below budget, the 1989 budget was still set at $973,381, barely down from last year’s budget (at $979,709) but well above actual expenditure last year of $827,092. Mr. MacKinnon said he felt he must budget to meet the possible contingency of the province raising welfare rates when its budget comes down this spring in line with the recommendations of the Social Assistance Review Committee Re port. ***** A comprehensive record of all war memorials in Huron County is being undertaken by the Huron County Pioneer Museum. At pre sent, Claus Breede, Project Direc tor for the Museum told council, there is no record of all the memorials. Mr. Breede had good news for councillors saying it appears the costs of the construction of the new portion of the museum and the renovation of the old school house is right on budget. The museum will be holding a film festival in its theatre beginn ing March 29. A Charlie Chaplin Film Festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. for each of five consecutive Wednesday nights. ***** County Council approved a $2,500 grant toward the construc tion project of the Blyth Festival. Council had earlier approved a $1,200 grant toward the operating budget of the Festival and at the same meeting approved a $1,200 grant to the operating fund of the Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend. The Festival had asked for $5,000. Sheila Richards, a past president of the Festival’s board of directors told the council she realized it was an extremely heavy budget year for the county with the new Huronview and the waste management project so she was pleased with the size of the grant. She said she hoped the board could come back next year for a further $2,500.
