The play has Joe being portrayed when he is 12 (by Jeffrey Renn) and when he is six (Chris McGregor) when he is called, Gogo. Joe’s dad (Allan Morgan) is coming to visit him for a few days, and as a lot of divorced dads do, Joe showers him with gifts to demonstrate his love. The time comes for Dad to leave again and Joe decides he wants to live with him. Unfortunately this is impossible because his dad is a struggling musician and would not have time to care for him. It is decided that Joe will continue living with his mother (Nicole Robert). This play aptly deals with a child’s view of divorce and the difficulties of understanding why parents act the way they do sometimes. Unfortunately, the play was not very well suited for the age level of the majority of children present. Many of them were under the age of seven and probably found it difficult to understand some of the play. For example are there two Joe’s? Both Joe’s were usually on the stage at the same time, but they were the same person, only at different ages. They knew about each other, but when a parent came on stage one of them grew “invisible.” Trying to simpli fy matters, the boys were dressed alike. Unfortunately as seen in the O.P.P. Noon to 1:30 p.m.Blyth 523-9381 question period at the end of the performance, this confused some children even more. Watching the children react to some of the onstage antics was almost as amusing as the play itself. The playwright (Thomas) was very adept at describing the characters of six and 12 year old boys. As the boys were horsing around on stage the children responded with much laughter. They could probably relate well if they had older or younger brothers or sisters of their own. The set was very attractive. It succeeded in the attempt to look like a twelve-year old’s room with posters taped to the walls and clothes strewn everywhere. It was simple as well, with a few odd props carrying across the idea of the different rooms of the house. The acting of McGregor and Renn was very convincing to watch. One child in the audience remark ed, “That’s an awfully big six year-old!” “Two Weeks, Twice A Year” is a well-written, well-performed play. It might have been better received with an older audience, but it succeeded in keeping attention for the greatest part of the hour. The play was well worth seeing and everyone spent an enjoyable time. PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA THURS., FRI..SAT. 5P.M.-12A.M.
