Atoms display
hockey skills
in Mildmay
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Atoms participated in
the 30th annual Mildmay Atom
Tournament last weekend where
they once again put on a good
display of their hockey skills.
Blyth was matched up against
Paisley in first round action last
Friday night. Blyth was all over
Paisley and they romped to an 8-1
win. Henry Bos was high marks
man on the evening as he earned
player of the game award with five
goals and one assist. Ryan Cham-
ney, contributed two goals while
assisting on three of Henry’s goals.
Brad Anderson notched Blyth’s
other goal as he opened the game
scoring in the first minute of play
and he also added an assist.
Scott Arthur notched three as
sists, Jason Rutledge added two
assists and Christopher Howson
chipped in with a single assist to
complete the scoring highlights.
Jonathan Collins, Rob Johnston
and Tim Cowan played solid de
fence in front of goalie Michael de
Jong who narrowly missed record
ing another shutout as Paisley
broke the goose egg late in the
game.
This 8-1 win sent Blyth into the
Championship round where they
met up with Clifford on Saturday
afternoon. Clifford eliminated
Blyth from further play as they
shaded Blyth 3-2.
Scott Arthur opened the scoring
in the final minute of the first
period as he one-timed a perfect
pass from Christopher Howson and
Brad Anderson.
Clifford took a 2-1 second period
lead and increased it to 3-1 late in
the third. Jason Rutledge got Blyth
to within one goal with 31 seconds
left in the game as he scored a
short-handed goal after being set
up by Henry Bos. Blyth pulled their
goalie but they couldn’t mount
another serious scoring drive and
they were defeated 3-2.
That ends the team’s tournament
hopes for this season and all that is
left is the group championship
series that opens tonight (Wednes
day) in Blyth against Huron Park.
