Bull season ends on Blyth skaters win trophies
downer after 9-3 loss
The Brussels Jr D Bulls ended
their 1989 season on a disappointed
note Friday night losing to the
visiting Tavistock Braves by a 9-3
score. The victory gave the Tavi
stock Club a 4-1 series win and
advances them to group semi-final
action.
Tavistock opened the scoring on
the powerplay before Sean Kieffer
tucked one upstairs on passes from
Steve Wheeler and Mike Vincent.
Tavistock clicked again on the
powerplay and the Braves took a
2- 1 lead to the dressing room after
20 minutes.
Tavistock increased their lead to
3- 1 before Ron Strome set up Mike
Vincent for the only scoring of the
middle frame.
The Braves, true to their name,

Atoms
led by chief Mark Albrecht’s two
goals and three assists ambushed
the Bulls with six third period goals
and skated to an easy 9-3 romp.
The Bulls final goal was by Marty
Rutledge assisted by Mike Vincent
and Brian Campbell.
While the playoffs didn’t go as
expected hopefully it will be re
membered the Bulls had an excep
tional year in terms of achievement
considering the number of first
year players the club carried.
Good luck to Jeff McGavin, Mike
Vincent, Brian Campbell, Sean
Kieffer and Paul Coultes, all who
played their final game of Junior
Hockey.
Special mention to Marty Rut
ledge who won league scoring and
Most Valuable Player awards as
well as setting numerous Bull team
scoring records.

The G. L. Hubbard Trophy was
given to the most improved power

guest skaters, Kerrie Shepherd and
Peter MacDonald were spectacular
and left the Blyth Figure Skaters

performance. The winners of the
draw for jogging shirts purchased
from Courtney’s Sport Shop were
Sandra Walsh and Shane Burk

Reeve Albert Wasson, snipped
the red ribbon to officially open the
Blyth Figure Skating Music Room
in the arena. Special invitations to
the Music Room opening were sent
to the members of the Blyth Figure

Some of these members fundraised
with the goal of a music room in
mind even back then and it was
nice to see that dream realized on
Carnival Night.

After battling back twice from
the brink of elimination Brussels
Atoms couldn’t complete their
miracle comeback as they dropped
an 8-2 decision to Huron Park
Tuesday night, March 7 in Huron
Park.
Brussels jumped out to an early
lead as Trevor Machan scored from
Shane Wilson and Jamie Smith and
Randy Beuermann scored an un
assisted goal less than a minute
apart in the first period.
The quick lead failed to discour
age Huron Park however as they
battled back to take a lead before
the end of the period, added one
more in the second then shelled the
Brussels net for four goals in the
third.
Huron Park had taken a 2-0 lead
in the series but Brussels had come
back with two wins to force the
deciding game in the best of five
series.
Belgrave Pee
Wees lose to
Ripley
The Belgrave Pee Wees recently
lost a close 2-0 game to Ripley.
These two teams have not played
each other for three months, but as
then this was a very close game.
The goalies for both teams kept the
score low.
Ripley scored late in the first
period. The second period was
scoreless. In the third period, with
time running out, Belgrave pulled
their goaltender, but Ripley inter
cepted a pass in their own end and
scored into the open net. Mike
Golley played very well as did the
rest of the team. The boys passed
very well but could just not beat the
Ripley goaltender.
Saturday afternoon, the Belgrave
team played an exhibition game
with Wingham.
Jeremy Brown opened the scor
ing 20 seconds into the game from
Jamie MacKay. Belgrave, then
took over, taking leads of 4-1 after
the first period and 10-1 after the
second period.
Brandon Coultes paced the at
tack with a goal and seven assists,
Brad Robinson had two goals and
five assists; Mark Robinson, four
goals and two assists; Tim Coultes,
two goals and one assist; Aaron
Coultes, three assists; Mark Olson
a goal and two assists; Peter
Gusso, two goals; Doug Wilson, a
goal and Brent Robinson an assist.
The team played very well
defensively, but the coaches were
very happy to see the excellent
passing that was done. Although
their names did not appear on the
game sheet, Mike Golley and Kyle
and Corey Moran played very well.
