Bly th Atoms eliminate Zurich, lose to Belmont BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms eliminated Zurich from further playoff action last week in a solid 7-0 whitewash. The team was shorthanded but they came through with one of their finest efforts of the season. With Peter Craig out for the season and Brian McNichol and Brad Ander son nursing injuries the team was left with a skeleton crew to finally subdue the Zurich squad. Chris Lee was down wrestling alligators in the Florida Everglades but Michael de Jong proved unbeatable with quick and steady goaltending for a solo shutout. Jason Rutledge led the point parade as he scored one goal and picked up an incredible five assists. Henry Bos notched two goals and an equally impressive four assists. Christopher Howson had one goal and two assists while Ryan Cham- ney scored two goals and Scott Arthur scored a single marker. Rob Johnston pitched in with an assist as he joined defence mates Jona than Collins and Tim Cowan in playing an inspired defensive game to seal the win. The Atoms now advance to the Brussels Sprouts in tournament Brussels Sprouts (six and seven year olds) found themselves on both the good and bad end of lopsided scores when they took part in the Clinton Tyke Tournament on Saturday. In the first game Brussels romp ed to a 7-0 win over Seaforth No. 1 team. Trevor Wilson got Brussels off to a good start with an unassisted goal, then a minute later scored his second, set up by Matthew McLel lan and Justin Ruttan. Mike Cooper scored with nine seconds left in the period with Darrell Dalton drawing the assist. Trevor Wilson scored his third of the game to start the scoring in the second period. Joel Kellington scored from Darrell Dalton then Justin Ruttan scored from Robbie Mitchell and Robert Richards. In the third Trevor Wilson got the only goal with Ryan Smith and Matthew McLellan getting the assists. Steven Oldfield played a good game in net and picked up the shut out. In the second game Brussels lost a rough game to Wingham by an 8-4 margin. Trevor Wilson gave Brussels a good lead scoring twice in the first period, the first unassisted and the second from Joel Kellington. Trevor Wilson’s work expanded the lead to 3-0 in the second when he completed his hat-trick from Andy Verbeek. But Wingham took over, scoring five straight goals in the second and adding another in the third before Ryan Smith got one back with Justin Ruttan assisting. Wingham quickly killed any chance of a comeback by scoring two more goals in the final two minutes. Houseleaguers edge Goderich Brussels Novice Houseleague team edged Goderich 3-2 in a game in Goderich March 4. Goderich took an early lead with a goal with 4:43 left in the first period but Corey Campbell scored in the second period to leave the game tied 1-1 at the end of the second. Jason Kellington scored from Corey Campbell and Matt Short reed early in the third to give Brussels the lead for the first time, but 34 seconds later Goderich tied the score again. Matt Shortreed scored from Brett Fischer with 2:26 left in the game to give Brussels the win. group championship which opens in Blyth next Wednesday, March 22 at 7:15 against Huron Park. The Atoms were entered in the Brussels Optimists Atom tourna ment last weekend. They opened the tournament on Saturday morn ing against Milverton. Blyth took a 3-0 first period lead on their way to a 5-1 opening round victory. Ryan Chamney scored the first two goals of the game as he was set up by Christopher Howson on the first goal and Scott Arthur on the second. Brian McNichol found the mark on a long shot for Blyth’s third goal with an assist to Jona than Collins. After Milverton counted one early in the second period, Brad Anderson restored Blyth’s three goal lead with a high deflected blueline blast. Scott Arthur round ed out the scoring midway through the third period as he was set up at the corner of the crease by Ryan Chamney. This 5-1 tournament opening victory sent Blyth into the cham pionship round where they met Brussels in second round action. Blyth scored two goals in both the first and second periods on their way to a 4-1 win. Ryan Chamney opened the scor ing on a backhand shot with an assist to Christopher Howson. Scott Arthur then scored his first of the afternoon as he redirected Jona than Collins’ point slapshot into the far corner. Christopher Howson built Blyth’s lead to 3-0 early in the second stanza with Scott Arthur making a nice pass to make the goal possible. Scott Arthur contin ued his offensive prowess later in the period as he backhanded home a nice pass from linemates Henry Bos and Jason Rutledge to give Blyth an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Brussels shattered Michael de Jong’s bid for a shut-out in the third period but it was too little too late as Blyth rolled to a 4-1 win. Blyth continued tournament play on Sunday afternoon where they were matched up against a solid team from Belmont in the third round action. Blyth struck early but Belmont rebounded and skated to a disciplined 6-1 win. Ryan Chamney sent Henry Bos in on a breakaway one minute into the game and Henry bulged the twine on a bullet-like wrist shot. The only other bright spot for Blyth was the play of goaltender Michael de Jong. Michael faced more rubber than a buyer at a tire convention and did a commendable job in keeping Blyth close. The Atoms played their hearts out but a stronger Belmont lineup accounted for the games final six goals as they defeated Blyth 6-1. Things are quiet this week but the action heats up again this weekend as the team is entered in the Mildmay Atom Tourney.
