Blyth PeeWees win
at Young Canada
Blyth Pee Wees scored two
nail-biting, one-goal victories to
advance to the semi-final game of
their division at the Young Canada
hockey tournament in Brussels this
coming Friday.
Ilderton provided the first oppo
nents for Blyth last Friday night
with Blyth coming up with a late
goal to get the victory. Ilderton took
an early lead at 2:09 of the first and
held it until the 5:36 mark of the
second period when Jerrod Button
converted a pass from Mike Brom
ley to tie the score. Four minutes
later Ilderton took the lead again
just 53 seconds before the period
ended. The period ended with
Ilderton ahead 2-1.
It took just 25 seconds into the
third for Blyth to get the goal back
as defenceman Brian VanSteelandt
threaded a point shot through a
forest of legs and past the Ilderton
goaltender. Conrad Bos and Shawn
Rutledge drew assists.
Brian Vansteelandt was respon
sible for setting up the go ahead
goal for Blyth as he carried the
puck down the left side and
centered a hard pass that Wilfred
Datema redirected into the net.
Four minutes later Ilderton tied
the score again but Wilfred Datema
scored with just over two minutes
left in the game for the win. Mike
McNichol let go a sizzling shot from
the point that missed the net but
rebounded off the boards to Wil
fred who deposited it in the open
net. Tim Lyons also drew an assist
on the play.
Blyth moved into the champion
ship round with a game Saturday
evening against Ripley. Blyth dom
inated the first two periods but
missed some glorious opportuni
ties. Blyth came out of the second
period trailing 1-0 after a Ripley
centering pass from behind the net
hit a skate and trickled past Jason
Elliott into the Blyth net.
Blyth came out flat and Ripley,
flying, in the third period and
strong work by Jason Elliott kept
Blyth in the game until Conrad Bos
tied the score. With three minutes
left in the game Blyth found itself
in penalty trouble with two men in
the penalty box and Ripley capita
lized taking the lead. But Michael
Bromley made an outstanding lone
rush down the ice for a short-hand
ed goal to tie the game for Blyth.
The clock was ticking down
toward overtime when Tyler Craig
found himself in front of the net
and slipped home a shot with 13
seconds on the clock to give Blyth
the victory.
The team returns to Goderich for
a game at 4:20 Friday afternoon.
