Blyth went on to a 4-1 win but lost out to the eventual tournament winner, Belmont in the next round. The tournament continues with the “ B” division this weekend. Blyth PeeWees win at Young Canada Blyth Pee Wees scored two nail-biting, one-goal victories to advance to the semi-final game of their division at the Young Canada hockey tournament in Brussels this coming Friday. Ilderton provided the first oppo­ nents for Blyth last Friday night with Blyth coming up with a late goal to get the victory. Ilderton took an early lead at 2:09 of the first and held it until the 5:36 mark of the second period when Jerrod Button converted a pass from Mike Brom­ ley to tie the score. Four minutes later Ilderton took the lead again just 53 seconds before the period ended. The period ended with Ilderton ahead 2-1. It took just 25 seconds into the third for Blyth to get the goal back as defenceman Brian VanSteelandt threaded a point shot through a forest of legs and past the Ilderton goaltender. Conrad Bos and Shawn Rutledge drew assists. Brian Vansteelandt was respon­ sible for setting up the go ahead goal for Blyth as he carried the puck down the left side and centered a hard pass that Wilfred Datema redirected into the net. Four minutes later Ilderton tied the score again but Wilfred Datema scored with just over two minutes left in the game for the win. Mike McNichol let go a sizzling shot from the point that missed the net but rebounded off the boards to Wil­ fred who deposited it in the open net. Tim Lyons also drew an assist on the play. Blyth moved into the champion­ ship round with a game Saturday evening against Ripley. Blyth dom­ inated the first two periods but missed some glorious opportuni­ ties. Blyth came out of the second period trailing 1-0 after a Ripley centering pass from behind the net hit a skate and trickled past Jason Elliott into the Blyth net. Blyth came out flat and Ripley, flying, in the third period and strong work by Jason Elliott kept Blyth in the game until Conrad Bos tied the score. With three minutes left in the game Blyth found itself in penalty trouble with two men in the penalty box and Ripley capita­ lized taking the lead. But Michael Bromley made an outstanding lone rush down the ice for a short-hand­ ed goal to tie the game for Blyth. The clock was ticking down toward overtime when Tyler Craig found himself in front of the net and slipped home a shot with 13 seconds on the clock to give Blyth the victory. The team returns to Goderich for a game at 4:20 Friday afternoon. Blyth, short on players and feeling effects of the flu bug, came up on the wrong end of a 4-0 score against their playoff rivals, Clif­ ford, who Blyth had eliminated earlier from playoff action. Blyth finally found the net in the next game skating away with a 7-0 win over Lucknow. Mark Wilson, Darryl Bromley and Jeff Cowan each picked up two goals, with Michael Haggitt getting the other. Michael Haggitt picked up four assists, Jeff Cowan and Darryl Bromley had two assists and Greg Blok had one. Blyth continued their winning ways, defeating Howick 6 to 0, and came home with the “B” trophy. Shane Burkholder picked up his second shut-out in a row for Blyth. Michael Haggitt led the attack with a hat-trick, with singles going to Mark Wilson, Jeff Cowan and Darryl Bromley. Darryl Bromley picked up three assists, Michael Haggitt with two, Jeff Cowan and Jeff Ferguson each with one. Belmont wins Optimist crown Belmont defeated Zurich 4-0 Sunday afternoon to capture the “C” Division championship at the 15th Brussels Optimist Atom Hockey tournament. Belmont gain­ ed the final by beating St. Cle­ ments in the first round, then Drayton in the second round before knocking off Blyth in the semi final. St. Clements took the Consola­ tion championship by defeating Lucknow 3-2. \ The tournament continues this weekend in Brussels when the “B” division teams take to the ice starting with Clinton against Lis- towel at 8:30 a.m. At 9:40 Goderich will play Walkerton, at 10:50 Durham will play Dresden and at 12 noon Oakridge will play Forest. Brussels Atoms win, lose Brussels Atoms started strongly in the Brussels Optimist tourna­ ment Saturday but ran into then- old nemisis from Blyth and bowed out in the second round. Harriston, which would later go on to humiliate Milverton, was no match for Brussels in the first game of the round. Harriston got off to a good start taking a 1-0 lead in the first but Shane Wilson scored from Trevor Machan to tie the score. Harriston got the lead back again with 19 seconds left in the period. Midway through the second Tre­ vor Machan scored from Shane Wilson to tie the score. Tom Pearson converted passes from Shane Wilson and Randy Beuer- mann to give Brussels the lead then Randy Beuermann scored from Jeff Lewington to make it 4-2. Shane Wilson scored his second in the game from Tom Pearson and Brad Mulvey to stretch the lead to 5-2 at the end of two periods. Harriston got one goal back when they scored at IL: 18 of the third but Trevor Machan restored the lead when he scored from Shane Wilson with 6:20 left for the final goal. Things weren’t quite so happy in the second round when Brussels played Blyth. Blyth struck early and built up a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period. Brussels bounced back with the only goal of the third but couldn’t get any closer. David Lewington scored the only goal from Randy Beuermann.
