McArter's 6 pt. effort can't save Crusaders first beat from give Friday night found the Crusaders boarding the bus at 5:15 for a long blustery trip to Lions Head for the second game of their playoff series. They played 9:10 of the period before Kevin Deitner the home goalie on a pass defenceman Len Stamper to the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. The North Stars came back two minutes later to even the score with the rest of the period scorless. The Crusaders out-shot the home team 19-11 but couldn’t beat the goalie. Brian Tenpas scored unassisted just 11 seconds into the second period to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. The home team didn’t let that live long as they scored to tie once more just 1:16 later. There was no more scoring until the 9:55 mark of the period and then Lions Head added four goals in the next three minutes. Brussels completed the scoring for the period when Kevin McArter Blyth Novices eliminate Clifford On Sunday, Feb. 26 in Blyth, the Blyth Novice lost a heart-breaker in overtime. Last Wednesday, March 1 Blyth travelled back to Clifford for a re-match. This game was much the same, end-to-end action, great skating, and all out effect by both teams. Michael Haggitt blasted in the first and only goal in this game, set up by linemates Jeff Cowan and Darryl Bromley at the 3:23 mark of the first period. Blyth did score a short-handed goal later but had it disallowed keeping the pressure on. It was all up hill for Blyth as they were forced to kill off three consecutive penalties, sitting on a one goal lead. Blyth put it all together, super goaltending by Shane Burkholder, getting a play off shutout, great defence and forwards playing two-way hockey. Congratulations are also in order to this team for being selected prize winners in the Esso Penalty Sweep- steakes. They played three penalty free games, allowing them to win Daoust hockey bags. BLYTH NOVICE ELIMINATES CLIFFORD The next game was back in Blyth on Sunday, March 5. Both teams expected to win and a super effort from Blyth as they out-skated Clifford by the score of 3 to 1. Darryl Bromley got Blyth’s first goal, an unassisted marker, half way through the second period. The pressure continued until only seconds left in the second period, Darryl Bromley scored his second goal set up by Jeff Cowan. Blyth went into the dressing room with a two goal lead, but they knew this game was not over. Clifford came out flying high, and their shifty little centre man, Kent Dedruyn cut into Blyth’s lead early in the third period with an unassisted goal. Blyth came right back seconds later with a blast from Michael Haggitt set up by line mates Darryl Bromley and Jeff Cowan. Blyth got the only penalty in the game with four minutes left, making things a little tense. The defensive pairings of Greg Blok and Ronnie Abel-Rinn and Jeff Ferguson and Corey Shannon play ed a great game helping Shane Burkholder between the pipes. Blyth now enters the semi-finals against a strong Wallace team. Blyth will play in Wallace Wednes day, March 8 at 6:15. Blyth’s next home game will be played Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. against Wallace. Blyth will also take part in the Teeswater Novice Tournament on Saturday, March 11. picked up the puck in his own end and wound his way through the players to beat the goalie with a good clean shot. The shots on goal were even at 10 each. The North Stars added two goals in the third period, 10 minutes apart to claim their 8-3 victory. They also picked up 66 minutes in penalties during the 60 minutes while the Crusaders had 38 min utes. Their clean play was definite ly absent in the game. Lions Head returned to Brussels on Sunday night for the third game of the series. Once more the Crusaders scored the first goal of the game. After playing 3:14 of the first period Dave Montgomery found the opening after receiving a pass from Kevin McArter and Gord Hutchinson. Four minutes later Lions Head evened the score and with just 1:37 remaining in the period, the North Stars went ahead by one goal. Forty seconds into the second period the visitors made the score 3- 1 and then after nine minutes more of play stretched their lead to 4- 1. Brussels came back 38 seconds later when Troy Pocaluyka scored from Ken Higgins and Kevin McArter to make it 4-2. Lions Head added one more at the midway point to make it 5-2. There was 5:17 remaining on the lock when Ken Higgins beat the goalie assisted by Dave Mont gomery and Kevin McArter. With 1:58 left in the period Kevin McArter scored from Ken Cousins and Kevin Deitner to bring the Crusaders within one goal to end the second period. The third period had Lions Head come out and score three goals in the span of a minute as the Crusaders must have still been relaxing and forgot they were on the ice and not in the dressing room. Troy Pocaluyka scored from Kevin McArter at the 11:41 mark and then Brussels added another goal at the 8:35 mark when Kevin McArter scored from Dave Mont gomery and Ken Higgins to bring the score to 8-6. Lions Head once more scored two quick goals to deepen the hole for the Crusaders. Brussels scored with 3:37 on the clock as Brian Deitner scored from Rob Cardiff but just couldn’t add any more and came up on the short end of the score. This loss eliminated the Crusa ders from any further hockey this season. It was too bad to lose but it was a blessing we came out of the series with no serious injuries. When the officials allow the calibre of play to take place that was witnessed in this series, perhaps the sport isn’t worth it. Although losing to Lions Head the Crusaders won the W.O.A.A. B Championship. Troy Pocaluyka won the scoring trophy and goal tenders Mike Smith and Ron Smith won the trophy for best goal tenders.
