Sports Bly th Tykes win Lucknow 'B' title The Brussels Jr. D Bulls fought off elimination and a four-game sweep with a split in weekend games against the Tavistock Braves. Friday night in Tavistock the Bulls dropped their third consecu­ tive game to the Braves by a 10-5 score. Tavistock scored the only goal of the first period and increased their lead to 4-0 in the second before Marty Rutledge broke the shut-out on a pass from Bob MacMillan. A Steve Fritz powerplay goal from Rutledge was matched by two Tavistock goals in 13 seconds and the Braves held a 6-2 lead after two periods. The Bulls rallied for two goals in the opening minutes of the third as Brian Campbell set up Bill Kinahan and Marty Rutledge. A Tavistock goal was matched by Rutledge’s third of the game before the hometown club scored three times in the final five minutes of play for the convincing win and a 3-0 lead in the series. Shots on goal were 41-32 in favor of Tavistock. Bulls highlights were Rutledge’s hat-trick and four-point game as Belgrave Novices beat Wingham Belgrave Novices hosted Wing­ ham in an exhibition game and skated to a 9-4 win Thursday night. It took only 15 seconds for Ryan Cook to give Belgrave a lead with Wayne Fenton assisting. The teams were scoreless then until Wayne Fenton scored from Brian Sinclair with 2:44 left in the first. Wingham got that one back less than a minute later to make the score 2-1 Belgrave at the end of the first. David McBurney scored two goals in two minutes to lengthen Belgrave’s lead. Jason Curtis assis­ ted on the first and the second was unassisted. Wingham scored one goal but Belgrave came back with three more before the period ended. Sunday afternoon a 100 per cent team effort resulted in a 5-2 Bulls victory and kept their playoff hopes alive. Brian Campbell scored the only goal of the first period on passes from Marty Rutledge and Craig Robertson. Marty Rutledge increased the lead to 2-0 on a setup from Ron Strome before Tavistock rallied with two powerplay goals and a 2-2 tie after 40 minutes. Ken Jacklin scored on a goalmouth pass from Mike Vincent at 2:14 then combined with Paul Coultes to setup Bruce Johnston at 5:01. Ron Strome clinched the victory with an empty netter with 22 seconds left on the clock. The Bulls outshot Tavistock 38-25 with Jeff McGavin returning to the net for the win. Tavistock returns to Brussels Friday night for a 9 p.m. start. Game 6 if necessary will be played in Tavistock Saturday night and if needed game 7 will be played in Brussels Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Winners of the Bulls $50 weekly draw were Don Crawford of Brus­ sels and Rob Ortleib, Wingham. The Blyth Tyke hockey team travelled to Lucknow last weekend to compete in the 17th annual Tyke Tournament. After losing their first game, Blyth won their next two games to capture the consolation trophy. Blyth started off slow in their first game, dropping a 6-2 decision to the Ripley-Huron team. Jeremy VanAmersfoort and Chris Carter notched the Blyth goals. Blyth was ready for their second game, playing excellent defensive hockey and timely scoring and defeated Teeswater 5-0. Blyth played well around its own net and Bryce Toll was flawless in goal to pick up the shut-out. Ripley were just coming off an exciting 8-7 win over Howick and had two players with an excellent scoring touch. Blyth again concentrated on defence and Toll was hot again in the Blyth net stopping numerous chances, in­ cluding several breakaways by the Ripley team. The Blyth team used four goals by Chris Carter and a single by Jamie Black to skate to a 5-2 win. The whole team worked hard and were rewarded with the “B” Trophy and pennants.
