A recent call to one Brussels home proved to be an adventure in how to attract wild birds to outdoor feeders. Both seed and suet feeders are located in several places on the verandah and in the yard. The back verandah has a cut evergreen tied to one of the posts for protection purposes. Juncos, chickadees, house finches, purple finches, American finches, woodpeckers, nut hatches, the occasional gros beak and of course, blue jays, starlings, sparrows and squirrels make good use of the facilities. Others in Brussels also play host to the birds. The Carpentiers have a flock of 20 or more morning doves at their feeders daily. The doves wait until a sparrow has checked out the feeder for security purposes and then fly in for a mid-morning snack. Rev. Charles says the squirrels have not had any success with the peanuts in the shell as the blue jays and starlings make off with them as soon as they are put out. Ruth and Clayton Sauve who also feed the birds noted that they have not had any cardinals this winter but they have been seen in the swamp at the edge of town. Ruth remarked that three wild Canada Geese are feeding regularly at the Kitchen farm. Other sightings have included blue herons and a king fisher on the telephone wire at the centre side road bridge. And what is involved in feeding these birds? To date in the one case - over two 11 A.M. MORNING SERVICE SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday, March 12 9:30 A.M. BELGRAVE SERVICE hundred pounds of small black sunflower seed.
