Despite the efforts of a falling Belgrave defender Blyth winger Jerrod Button gets off a shot during a thrilling playoff series between Blyth and Belgrave Pee Wees last week. Belgrave took the first game but Blyth rebounded to take the next two games, ail by one goal. Brussels Novices win first playoff round Blyth Pee Wees elimate Belgrave On Friday, Feb. 24 Brussels defeated Howick 4-1 to advance to the quarter final of the WOAA Novice Central Championships. Brussels opened the scoring with 3:26 left in the first period on a goal by Chad McCallum with assists from Steve Machan and Brett Fischer. Howick tied the score 1-1 half way through the second period. In the third period goaltender Jamie Thomas made an outstanding save on a breakaway. This save seemed to ienite the Brussels team. At 12:29 Scott Clarkson lifted a high shot over the goalieās shoulder assisted from Andrew Exel and Jeff Finch. Then Andrew Exel scored two goals with assists from Steve Machan, Glen Van Beek and Josh Beuermann and Scott Clarkson. The team completely outskated Howick in the game and the series. The Howick goalie David Johnson was outstanding in all three games. Brussels had strong performance from other members of the team, Cory Newman on right wing and Joanne Van Keulen. The team now plays Ripley Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Ripley and Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Brussels. The Belgrave Pee Wees won and lost in their group playoffs last week and tied in an exhibition game. BELGRAVE 3, BLYTH 1 The first game of the playoffs was played Monday night. The first period was scoreless. In the second period, Mark Robinson scored an unassisted goal to give Belgrave an early 1-0 lead. Mike Bromley scored an unassisted goal for Blyth while they were playing short- handed to tie the game 1-1 after two periods. In the third period, Brad Robinson scored on his own rebound to put Belgrave ahead. Peter Gusso added the insurance marker with Brad and Mark Robin son getting the assists. BELGRAVE 2, HENSALL 2 Wednesday night, Belgrave tra velled to Hensall for an exhibition game. Hensall scored the first goal of the game. Mark Olson tied the score from Tim Coultes. Peter Gusso then put Belgrave ahead 2-1 from Kyle Moran and Olson to finish the first period. There was no scoring in the second period and Hensall tied the game in the third. BLYTH 3, BELGRAVE 2 Thursday night, Blyth tied the playoff round at one game each to force the deciding game on Satur day. Peter Gusso scored the first goal of the game from Brad Robinson. Mike Bromley scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at 1-1 after the first period. Jerrod Button scored from Brom ley to start the second period. Gusso tied the score from Mark and Brad Robinson. Wilfred Datema scored from Mark Bricker to com plete the scoring for the second period and the game. BLYTH 3, BELGRAVE 2 Saturday afternoon, the deciding game of this playoff round was played. The first and second periods were scoreless. In the third period, Mark Robin son scored from Brandon Coultes to put Belgrave ahead. Conrad Bos tied the score from Jerrod Button and Brian Vansteelandt. Peter Gusso scored an unassisted goal for Belgrave, but Jerrod Button scored an unassisted goal for Blyth to tie the score. Button then scored again from Mike Bromley to give Blyth the 3-2 win. Blyth, Brussels Houseleaguers tie 3-3 Brussels and Blyth Houseleague Novices played to a 3-3 tie in a game in Blyth Feb. 20. After Blyth took a 2-0 lead early in the first period, Trevor Wilson started a comeback for Brussels scoring a goal with 3:40 left in the period assisted by Scott Clarkson. But Blyth opened the lead again with a goal with 47 seconds left in the first period for a 3-1 lead. Jamie Thomas scored from Brett Fischer and Corey Campbell. In the third it was Jamie Thomas again from Clint Fischer and Amber Ruttan to tie the score at 3-3. More hockey on page 26 and 20.
