Sharon Wilson [left] was presented with the 1989 award for the person who has contributed the most to the Scouting movement in Bly th when the presentation was made at the annual Family Banquet of the Scouts in Blyth Thursday. Trish Thompson of the First Blyth Group Committee made the presentation. Blyth skaters pass tests Swinging Seniors enjoy potluck lunch The Blyth Swinging Seniors met on Wednesday, February 22 in the Memorial Hall. The meeting began with a delicious pot luck dinner at 12 o’clock noon. This was followed by a lively sing-song led by Vera Badley with Ella Richmond at the piano. President John Hesselwood con­ ducted the business period. He mentioned that the next meeting would also begin at 12 noon with a pot luck dinner. The program will be a mixed fun program. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing Euchre, Lost Heir and Scrabble. The winners were: euchre - high lady, Flora Fear; high man, Jim Lawrie; low lady, Ida Procter; low man, Klass DeJong. For Lost Heir winners were: high lady, Mary Walden; high man, Vera Badley (playing as a man); low lady, Feme Howatt; low man, Millar Richmond. The winner for Scrabble was Irene Schultz. The Blyth Figure Skating Club held a very successful low test day, February 12, 1989. Skaters from Blyth and sur­ rounding districts participated in being tested each in their own category and a very high percent­ age passed with flying colours. Blyth skaters that were successful were: Tina Burkholder, Rebecca Morrison - Dutch Waltz; Amanda Howson, Erica Clark, Rachael Ath- ur - Canasta; Angela McCool, Kim Ferguson - Preliminary Figures. The last tests taken in 1988 were passed by: Kim Richmond - Pre­ liminary Figures; Erin Bolger - Preliminary Free Skate; Andrea Henry - Willow; Cathy Nesbitt - Blyth Novices win first series On Saturday, Feb. 25 the Blyth Novice team put out a stubborn Teeswater team in a close 2 to 1 game. Once again good goaltending at both ends of the ice kept this game low scoring, Shane Burkholder doing the job for Blyth and Russell Hurst for Teeswater. Darryl Bromley got Blyth on the scoreboard first, on a shot to the corner with linemates Jeff Cowan and Michael Haggitt setting up the Play. The score stayed this way until early in the third period. After several key saves on Blyth players by Russell Hurst, Michael Haggitt surprised the Teeswater goalie with a long shot, scoring an unassisted marker making the score 2-0 for Blyth. Teeswater battled back minutes Rocker; Angela Nethery -- Argen­ tine Tango which is the last of the gold dances for Angela. She is the only skater of the Blyth Club to achieve her “Gold”. The following Blyth Skaters have also passed in their category: Beginners - Mary Beth Brigham, Heidi Meir, Heather Black, Vicki Black, Teag Onn, Pauline Blok, Rachel Morrison, Jennifer Pierce, Samantha Funston, Laura Meier, Becky Archambault, Katie Snell, Derek Cook, Brent Medd, Melissa Medd; Elementary — Elisha Court­ ney, Melissa Hanna, Jennifer Brig­ ham, Julie Cowan, Jud Hakkers, Jonathan Cucksey, Tammy Walk­ er; Basic - Courtney Rutledge; later with a goal by Daryl Dore, cutting into Blyth’s lead. The last six minutes of the game was pressure hockey but Blyth defence came through preserving the 2 to 1 win, eliminating Teeswater from further play-off hockey. The next day Sunday, Feb. 26 Blyth started the next series, against a stronger team, Clifford, and what a game it was. Each team came out of the gates determined to win as the play rushed end to end. Clifford scored first at the 4:25 mark of the first, but Blyth came right back later bn a blast from Michael Haggitt set up by Jeff Cowan and Corey Shannon. Clifford took the lead in the second period but again Blyth tied the game, this time Mark ‘Sparky’ Wilson stealing the puck and Novice I - Ashley Howson, Aman­ da Hanna, Julie Ritchie; Novice II - Zoellyn Onn, Capucine Onn; Novice III - Courtney Sauve, April Van Amersfoort, Rebecca Morri­ son, Pamela Morrison; Novice IV - Christina Black; Proficiency - Cry­ stal Cucksey, Jennifer Cucksey, Kara Murray. The Blyth Figure Skating Club is presenting carnival night “Holi­ days on Ice”, March 3, 1989, 7:30 p.m. at Blyth and District Com­ munity Centre. The official opening of the new Blyth Figure Skating Club “Music Room” will be cele­ brated during the festivities and everyone is welcome. Admission at the door. scoring an unassisted goal. Blyth kept the pressure on and it paid off as Darryl Bromley stole the puck and also scored an unassisted goal giving Blyth the lead going into the third period. The third period was fast and furious action as Clifford tried to tie the game. At the mid-way point they did score and once again the game was tied and stayed tied forcing overtime. Blyth lost the game in overtime getting outscored 3-1 in 10 minutes of play. Mark Wilson scored Blyth’s lone goal on a pass from Jeff Ferguson. This was a tough game to lose as they all worked hard, only to lose in overtime. These two teams play again Wednesday, March 1, at 6:30 in Clifford.
