Blyth Novices win first series
On Saturday, Feb. 25 the Blyth
Novice team put out a stubborn
Teeswater team in a close 2 to 1
game.
Once again good goaltending at
both ends of the ice kept this game
low scoring, Shane Burkholder
doing the job for Blyth and Russell
Hurst for Teeswater.
Darryl Bromley got Blyth on the
scoreboard first, on a shot to the
corner with linemates Jeff Cowan
and Michael Haggitt setting up the
Play.
The score stayed this way until
early in the third period. After
several key saves on Blyth players
by Russell Hurst, Michael Haggitt
surprised the Teeswater goalie
with a long shot, scoring an
unassisted marker making the
score 2-0 for Blyth.
Teeswater battled back minutes

cutting into Blyth’s lead. The last
six minutes of the game was
pressure hockey but Blyth defence
came through preserving the 2 to 1
win, eliminating Teeswater from
further play-off hockey.
The next day Sunday, Feb. 26
Blyth started the next series,
against a stronger team, Clifford,
and what a game it was. Each team
came out of the gates determined
to win as the play rushed end to
end. Clifford scored first at the 4:25
mark of the first, but Blyth came
right back later bn a blast from
Michael Haggitt set up by Jeff
Cowan and Corey Shannon.
Clifford took the lead in the
second period but again Blyth tied
the game, this time Mark ‘Sparky’
Wilson stealing the puck and

scoring an unassisted goal. Blyth
kept the pressure on and it paid off
as Darryl Bromley stole the puck
and also scored an unassisted goal
giving Blyth the lead going into the
third period.
The third period was fast and
furious action as Clifford tried to
tie the game. At the mid-way point
they did score and once again the
game was tied and stayed tied
forcing overtime. Blyth lost the
game in overtime getting outscored
3-1 in 10 minutes of play. Mark
Wilson scored Blyth’s lone goal on
a pass from Jeff Ferguson. This
was a tough game to lose as they all
worked hard, only to lose in
overtime. These two teams play
again Wednesday, March 1, at 6:30
in Clifford. Game three if necessary
will be in Blyth Sunday, March 5 at
1 p.m.
