CHARLES CARPENTIER BRUSSELS AND ETHEL UNITED CHURCHES TV commercials are driving crazy!! I’m not a TV critic, but the messages they’re sending out have me quite confused. I’ve tried that after-shave lotion Reverend Warren H. Lammers is the New Blyth Christian Reformed Church minister. He and his wife, Jobje, and three of their four children have moved here from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Rev. Lammers and his family are enjoying the pace of life here and are looking forward to getting to know the families in his parish. Blyth Christian Reformed welcome new pastor and I didn’t turn into a sexy sailing captain. In fact on the first Sunday morning in church people took one whiff and quickly moved to the back of the church, where they still are! When I tried feeding the cat the special gourmet stuff in a crystal glass, she bit me. Or what about the guy, who is climbing some rock mountain by the roaring ocean and he opens a container of margarine. Why didn’t the dodo make his sandwiches before he started out, I keep wondering? Are we supposed to carry margarine with us every where? Doesn’t it spoil? But what do I know. I’m just as much a victim as the average viewer. My laundry has never been whiter than white. When 1 take the garbage out my trash bags split. I even flunked the Pepsi challenge! But there is one commercial, I can count on. Made by John the Apostle of Love: ‘‘God loved us so dearly that he sent his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through Him, and who ever loves is a child of God and knows God.” (John 4: 9-10). People who know God are people who realize that their love and the love of God can illuminate the loneliest and darkest night. Can shed light in the darkest cave. Can make safe the most dangerous and precarious of paths. People of love are people who are not afraid to bear the paschal candle, knowing that those to whom they bring it may well attempt to extinguish it. Thank God for John’s commercial, because it has produced people of love, who are not afraid to get their hands dirty. Who do not attempt to kick while down ... even by gossip ... but rather are not afraid to be seen lending an uplifting hand, and who can sing with Mary: ‘‘My spirit delights in God my Saviour.” (Luke 1:47). Did you ever make this statement? If the Christian Church wants to be Christian, it irust follow its Master and not be ashamed to be associated with the px>r, the alcoholic, the offender, the deviate. Of course, we who are Christians, need help and inspiration to do that. But we have an example: Jesus Christ. He came, we are told, not to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved. Are we his followers? Warren Lammers. ‘ ‘ I want to get to know the people and the struggles they have; the pastoral needs they have!” Rev. Lammers said last week. Rev. Lammers, his wife Jobje, and three of their four children; Sarah 16, Ruth 13, and Rachel, 11, moved to Blyth in January. (The couple’s oldest child, son, Paul, 17 had to remain behind in Grand Rapids, Michigan to complete his education.) Ironically it was six years ago when the family camped at Point Farms and worshipped in the Christian Reformed Church here on a Sunday morning, never thinking that one day they would take up residence here. Then this past August he was contacted followed closely by an official letter of call on September 4. ‘‘We enjoy the pace of life here. It is a much healthier lifestyle than the one we were accustomed to.” Reverend Lammers was born and raised in the middle of Ameri ca’s farm country, Wisconsin. He assumes that perhaps that is why he ‘‘seems to plug in O.K. here.” He received his seminary training at Calvin Theological Seminary, graduating from there in 1976. The 39-year-old minister is currently working on his Doctorate of Mini stry, from Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. Jobje Lammers is jokingly referr ed to by her husband as ‘‘My Gypsy.” She was born in the Netherlands, then at the age of 5 came with her family to the Mississauga area. She met her husband while they attended the Trinity Christian College in South Chicago. Reverend Lammers and his wife share the belief that the basic unit of society is the family and not the individual. “The world is becoming more alert to the fact that the family unit needs to receive more protection within society,” he said. HCBE-teachers reach settlement A tentative settlement has been reached after negotiations between the Huron County Board of Educa tion and its elementary school teachers. Negotiators from the board and the provincial executive of the teachers’ association reached the agreement at the February 14 meeting that was held in London, Ontario. Mediator, David White- head assisted in the negotiation of a settlement. ON END OF LINE LEE PREMIUM ALL SEASON RADIAL TIRES P215/75R15 STEEL RADIAL $ 7COO INSTALLED & BALANCED 1 ° EA.
