Minister to speak to Liberals Sell out crowd attend tribute to Mickey The Honourable Lyn McLeod, Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities, who has an extensive and distinguished background in education, will be the featured guest at this year’s annual meeting of the Huron Provincial Liberal Riding Association on March 9. Mrs. McLeod was elected to the Ontario Legislature in the Septem­ ber 10, 1987 election. She received her B.A. from the University of Manitoba in 1963, her Honours B.A. in 1984, and her M.A. in Psychology from Lakehead Univer­ sity in Thunder Bay in 1986. Mrs. McLeod was a member of the Lakehead Board of Education for 17 years where she served as chair for seven one-year terms. She is currently serving as a member of the Lakehead University Board of Governors. Married to general practitioner, Dr. Neil McLeod, she and her husband have four daughters. Jack Riddell who is also Minister of Agriculture and Food in the Peter­ son cabinet, represents the riding at Queen’s Park. Tickets for the meeting are $15 each or $5 for students. They are available from any executive member or municipal chairperson in the country. As usual it was a sellout crowd at the Brussels Figure Skating Carni­ val last Saturday evening. Close to 500 people packed the Community Centre to watch the entertaining program. “Mickey Mouse and Friends’’ was a tribute to the famous rodent who celebrated his 60th birthday this year. Plenty of Walt Disney characters were on hand to celebrate. To start the festivities was “Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse’’. Lanette Todd was featured as the guest of honour while a group of youngsters paraded around her, disguised as a colourful array of birthday packages, all addressed to Mickey. Cinderella appeared on the pro­ gram with 14 tiny mice. Step­ mother, Kim McWhirter and Step­ sisters, Lanette Todd and Sarah McArter assisted some of the adorable little creatures along while Lisa Pennington as Cinder­ ella danced at the ball. Then it was off to Never Never Land where Peter Pan played by Shannon Craig appeared to have her hands full trying to teach her group of Lost Boys how to f y. Sheri Huron groups get grants Ontario Minister of Culture and Communications Lily Oddie Munro has recently announced grants to two groups in Huron County. The Huron Historic Gaol will receive $1,229 from the Ministry for the installation of a security system, The Van Egmond Founda­ tion will receive $3,758 for assis­ tance in acquiring portable equip­ ment and materials. Huether’s Snow White kept things running smoothly when the Seven Dwarfs went off to work. Early in the second half the audience saw an aerobic routine demonstrated by none other than Goofy. Kim McWhirter had the title role and as Sport Goofy she was quite busy getting her team in shape. Last, but most certainly not least, you couldn’t have a party for Mickey and not invite his old pal, the inimitable Donald Duck, could you? With a little help from Sarah McArter and friends, Donald was there with plenty to say as usual. Interspersed throughout the pro­ gram were solo and dance perfor­ mances by the Intermediate and Junior skaters in addition to the two Wingham Precision Teams. Featured performers, Kevin Whee­ ler and Michelle Menzies and Peter MacDonald and Kerrie Shepherd each performed three routines during the course of the evening. Following the carnival presenta­ tions were made to the coaches on behalf of the Brussels Figure Skating Club in appreciation for their work with these young ska­ ters. received a grant from the Ministry of Housing’s Ontario Home Re­ newal Program in the amount of $19,938, and is eligible for a total grant of up to $59,938. Under Housing’s Building Action Admini­ stration Fund, the village of Brus­ sels will receive a total of $6,750 to enable it to update its buildings department with computerized equipment.
