THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1989. last week when hundreds of “blue boxes’’ for the township recycling program arrived earlier than expected. The boxes will likely be delivered to homes within the next month if volunteer help can be found, he said. Grey 'blue' boxes go out soon The blue boxes symbolic of recycling programs across Ontario will soon be appearing in homes across Grey and McKillop town ships. The boxes arrived earlier than expected at the Grey Township Office last week. Grey and McKil lop are part of a pilot project funded by the provincial govern ment to see if having the blue boxes in the house in a rural community will increase the use of recycling. Normally the blue boxes are used in curbside recycling programs used in urban areas. The idea, Brad Knight, clerk treasurer of the township explain ed, is that the blue box in the home will be a symbolic reminder for people to recycle. Each home will get one box and Mr. Knight freely admits one box may not be large enough for people in rural areas who go to the waste disposal site once a month. Mr. Knight said that he’s hoping volunteers will help distribute the boxes around the township. He expects the boxes will likely be delivered to the homeowners some time in the next month. As part of this pilot project the township must keep records to see if the volume of garbage increases with the use of the blue boxes, he said. Mr. Knight said the township’s recycling program generally is working well. One problem, he said, is that the volume of cans is too large by comparison to the weight and so the township is not getting as much from each load as it should be. If people would flatten their cans before depositing them in the recycling bin it would help this situation, he said.
