The goaltender for the Goderich team wins a race for the puck with his own defenceman and a Blyth forward during a game in a tournament for Christian Reformed Church teams in Blyth on the weekend. Goderich won the game Friday night by a 4-2 count. Sports Playoff format leaves Bulls with mystery The Brussels Bulls management travelled to Belmont Monday night in order to set up the 1989 playoff schedule. Problems had arisen over the procedure used to determine the final standings. There are three grdups of Junior D Hockey in Ontario: the Western Jr D, North Division in which the Bulls play; the Western Jr D South Division in which teams in the London area play, and the Southern Counties League situated in the Brantford-Woodstock area. The OHA has decided to com bine the three groups into an east and west division for playoffs which means Brussels, Exeter, Lucan, Mitchell, Seaforth, Tavistock, and Wellesley will be joined by teams from Alvinston, Mt. Brydges and Thedford to form a 10-team nest division with the two bottom teams not making playoffs. The problem occurs because Mt. Brydges, Alvinston and Thedford play a 35-game schedule while the Bulls play a 36 game schedule. Therefore a “Final” decision had to be reached on whether a point system or a won-loss percentage format could be used to determine final standings. All that’s known for sure is the first place team plays the fifth, second vs. sixth, third vs. seventh and fourth vs. eighth. To complicate matters only three points separated the second place club from the sixth place club. Also nobody wants to finish fifth and play the Lucan Irish who finished the regular season with 30 wins and six losses. Either way the Bulls hope to open the ‘89 playoffs at home sometime this weekend. Marty Rutledge won the league scoring championship and finished as the top point getter for the three leagues of Junior D hockey. FACTORY Final Bulls scoring stats GP G - A = pTS. The team played its best game of the season and came out on top 5 - 0. Steve Machan scored three goals and Andrew Exel, two. Brett Fischer had two assists with Corey Newman and Chad McCallum, one each. Jamie Thomas earned the shut-out with excellent help from defence people Joanne VanKeulen, Jeff Finch, Josh Beuermann and Brett Fischer. Up front, Scott Clarkson played an excellent checking game and Glen VanBeek was strong along the boards. Every player skated hard and completely dominated Howick. On Saturday, the team played Howick to a 2-2 tie. The team came out sluggish for the first two periods and fell behind 1-0. In the third period Corey Newman made a great scoring play to tie the game. However, Howick scored with seven minutes left to take the lead. Brussels outplayed Howick through the rest of the period but couldn’t bag a goal. With 25 seconds left, Brussels pulled the goalie and the move resulted in a goal by Steve Machan with assists from Brett Fischer and Scott Clarkson. The game then went into a 10 minute overtime, but neither team could score. The series now comes back to Brussels on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6:45 p.m. SLABWOOD Approximately 1/2 Price of body wood HARD MAPLE a ASH 17 cu. yd. box delivered within 20 miles. $140.00 SAVE!
