Take time choosing gown, avoid a mistake You don’t have to be clothes conscious to recognize that your wedding day is the one time in your life when fashion blunders are to be avoided at all cost. No bride relishes the thought of pouring over her wedding album 10 years down the road and realizing that her bridal gown just “wasn’t her.” Worry about the frills later: the most important consideration in choosing your dress is that it complement your body type. Much can be done through careful selec tion of style and fabrics to cover up what you yourself may perceive to be physical imperfection, say ex perts. The first rule is to shop alone. There’s nothing worse than making the rounds with a mother or friend who may have a passion for crinoline skirts when secretly you yearn for a slinky sheath dress. Take along light-colored hose and a pair of shoes with heels of Wedding cakes make a personal statement similar height to those to be worn on the wedding day. Running shoes and black pantyhose just don’t cut it when going after a certain effect, but it’s surprising just how many brides-to-be try on gowns with precisely that type of apparel. Tall women who want to mini mize their height should consider dresses featuring the layered look, soft fullness in the skirt, wide belts or slightly puffed sleeves. Dresses that just skim the ankle also cut down on an overly long look. Low necklines can also minimize height, but should be avoided if the bride has a very long neck or bony shoulders - a sheer yoke is a better choice. Shorter women should stay away from huge trains, rows of ruffles around hemlines and large-scale encrustation across the bodice. Instead, they should consider long rows of covered buttons, long, slim sleeves, perhaps coming to a lily-point on the back of the hand, and vertical seaming or decoration. Heavier brides should rule out clingy fabrics, choosing instead a non-shiny fabric with body. Soft satins and velvet are not for them. Hips can be played down with a gown with a hemline slightly wider than the hips - a small frill around the hem can work wonders. Try also to balance heavy hips with shoulder detail and slightly wider sleeves. Top-heavy women should draw attention away from the bust. Heavy encrustation of diamente on the bodice should be avoided; vertical seaming, V-necklines and sheer yokes that do not plunge too low are better choices. And skip a cinched waistline - choose one that falls to a slight V-line. Don’t feel bashful about discuss ing your figure with sales staff. They are there to help, and they see a multitude of shapes and sizes every day. Do clip out pictures of styles you like and present them, along with an estimate of what you intend to spend, to the sales assistant. Whatever your choice, choose carefully. Because of the personal nature of wedding gown styles, most manufacturers require a 50 percent non-refundable deposit. z20% DISCOUNT WEDDING INVITATIONS - ■ -p. v, ...i- Select your invitations from collection of traditional and contemporary designs. Delicate colors, ribbons, intricate ornamentation, and icing flowers and flourishes are the new tradition in wedding cakes. This elegant “Victoriana” wedding cake is a far cry from the first American “spice” wedding cakes that were heavy with dried fruits and laced with brandy and liquor. Gone are the days when a young woman baked her cake before she had even met her groom to display her culinary gifts. Today’s bride, after she’s met the groom, can still make her wedding cake choice a personal expression. RECEPTION FOCAL POINT With the wide variety of products and ideas available today, she can create a cake worthy of being a focal point of her reception. A bride sometimes chooses a wedding ornament to top the cake first, then creates the cake or has it designed to accent it. The “Victorian Charm” cake topper is just one of the many possibilities from Wilton Enter prises, a leading supplier to home and commercial bakers. It is avail able in a variety of colors - blue, ivory, lilac, pink or white - to match the color scheme. Wilton’s special publications are also a good resource for other cake designs and decorating ideas. The Victoriana cake is made using 8, 12 and 16-inch round pans. Corinthian pillars, cake separator plates and bells. The cake, with the top layer frozen for the first wedding anniversary, services 155 guests. ADVANCE PREPARATION For those who would like to create a special wedding cake, the cake layers can be baked up to a month ahead and frozen until it’s time to ice and decorate. But plan to do the final assembly of the tiered cake at the reception site. To rent your wedding formal wear An elegant variation.
