Blyth Atoms lose in final BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms played a lot of hockey again last week as they participated in the Seaforth Atoms Tournament and hosted Brussels in league action. The Atoms performed their pass ing magic last Wednesday, Janu ary 18 as they defeated Brussels 11-2. This team is powerful when they are passing, unfortunately they have yet to learn that consis tency is needed in this area. Henry Bos was top marksman as he netted three goals and three assists. Linemate Ryan Chamney counted two goals and three as sists. Brian McNichol picked up another hat-trick while assisting on a single marker. Christopher How- son scored one goal and one assist and Jason Rutledge and Scott Arthur each recorded one goal while picking up two assists. The defence also got in on the act as Brad Anderson counted two helpers and Jonathan Collins and Tim Cowan each held one assist. On the Ladies’ side, $600 went to the Grand Champions, $375 went to the Grand Champion Finalists, $300 went to the Consolation Champions, and $200 went to the Consolation Finalists. Tournament Chairman Andy Lubbers said that all tournament profits will be donated back into the community, speculating that the final amount could be “up quite a bit from the $3,000 donated to the Blyth arena last year.” The Blyth Broomball League also sponsors a major ball tournament each June, which also generates funding for community facilities. To take the Men’s Grand Cham pionship, the Universals fought the Nanicoke team to a 1-0 win in sudden death overtime; squelched the Cargill Rookies in a 3-0 win, and squeaked by the Glammis Zurich provided the opposition as Blyth opened the Seaforth tournament on Tuesday, January 17. Brian McNichol opened the scoring 31 seconds into the game as he drilled a rocket just under the crossbar. Lead passes from Jason Rutledge and Jonathan Collins made this initial goal possible. Brad Anderson upped the count to 2-0 a minute and a half later as his blueline bomb was redirected by a Zurich defender. One minute into the second period Jason Rutledge added to their lead as he poked in a loose puck at the edge of the crease. Tim Cowan and Brian McNichol added a helping hand on this important goal. In what is becoming a bad habit, the team had another mid-game snooze as Zurich scored two quick goals to close to within one. However, with just under a minute left in the game Henry Bos spotted Ryan Chamney streaking down the right wing boards. Ryan took the Flyers in a 3-2 overtime battle before facing off with the Seaforth Easy Riders in the tournament’s final game. Other tournament winners were as follows: Men’s “A” Consolation Championship, Nanicoke; Men’s “A” Consolation Runner-up, Lanesville Lords; Men’s “B” Championship, Teeswater Pedro’s; Men’s “B” Runner-up, Teeswater B.C. Chargers; Men’s “B” Con-' solation Championship, Clinton Warriors; Men’s “B” Consolation Runners-up, Seaforth Royals. On the Ladies’ side, the Seaforth Parr Lines took the A Champion ship, defeating the Seaforth Queen’s who had to settle for the A Runner-up award; and the Blyth Sparlings defeated the Mildmay B.C. Mustangs to win the B Championship and B Runner-up Championship respectively. pass and drifted a power play goal off the post and behind the Zurich puck stopper. The pressure was off and Blyth advanced into the cham pionship round with a 4-2 win. Blyth played their second game on Saturday afternoon as they were matched up against an equally impressive squad from Mooretown. The first period ended 1-1 as Jason Rutledge got Blyth rolling with an assist to Scott Arthur. Brian McNichol gave Blyth the lead early in period two as he stole the puck and went in alone and put a drive past the goalie’s outstretch ed glove. Brian then assisted on Christopher Howson’s goal that gave Blyth a 3-1 lead. Mooretown narrowed the lead to 3-2 but a three-way passing play from the centre ice face-off put Blyth up by two again. Henry Bos pocketed the winner thanks to linemates Chris topher Howson and Ryan Cham ney.
