HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1989-01-25, Page 15Letting down his guard in the final 45 seconds of play Sunday afternoon in Brussels, the Bulls’ goaltender Todd Rice let this one slip by to tie the Exeter Hawks at a 5-5 score, despite the efforts of team-mates Craig Robertson [No. 3], Jason Coulter [No. 10] and an unidentified Bull in holding off the marauding Hawks. Filling in for a sick-listed Jeff McGavin, Mr. Rice distinguished his debut by stopping 34 shots, 18 of them in the third period alone. Bulls get 2 ties, loss in weekend games THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1989. PAGE 15. The Brussels Jr. D. Bulls played three games this past week, tying two and losing one to bring their season record to 16 wins, 13 losses and two ties. Wednesday night the Bulls tra­ velled to Lucan where they were easily handled by the first place Irish 9-4. The Irish use midweek Crusaders beat Arthur, tie Drayton on weekend BY LOIS McARTER After a 9-8 loss to Seaforth and a 4-4 tie with Wellesley a week ago the Crusaders came back with a win and a, tie this past weekend. The team travelled to Arthur on Friday night with just two lines and a goalie to play a full bench by the host team. Arthur scored the first two goals of the game at 14:18 and 12:53 but the Crusaders’ Gord Hutchinson scored just 50 seconds later assist­ ed by Dave Stephenson and Ken Cousins to get Brussels on the board. Randy Clarke scored with just 1:31 left in the period assisted by Dave Stephenson and Rob Cardiff to finish the first period of play tied at two. Four minutes into the second period the Crusaders capitalized on a power play effort when Ken Cousins scored, assisted by Dave Stephenson and Troy Pocaluyko to put Brussels in the lead. Gord Hutchinson scored unassis­ ted a minute later to add to that lead. Arthur then scored at the 10:53 mark to come within one goal again. Dave Stephenson scored from Ken Cousins with 7:55 on the clock and in less than a minute Kevin Deitner scored from Troy Pocaluy­ ko for a short-handed goal. With 1:11 left on the clock, Ken Cousins scored from Dave Stephenson and Brian Deitner on a power play. The goalies played well at either enu as the third period was home games to their advantage due to problems of visiting teams icing a full squad. In the Bulls case several players are forced to make the late night trip to and from Guelph University. Brian Campbell set up Ron Strome for the game’s first goal before Lucan replied with three of scoreless, giving Brussels the 7-3 victory. DRAYTON 4 - BRUSSELS 4 The Crusaders were at home to Drayton on Sunday night at 8 p.m. The first 14 minutes of the period were scoreless before Drayton opened the scoring and then added a second goal two minutes later to hold a 2-0 lead when the period ended. Thirty-eight seconds into the second period the Drayton squad scored again to take a sound 3-0 lead in the game. After four minutes of play Kevin McArter finally picked up the puck in his own end to go down the ice and beat the visiting goalie to get Brussels on the scoreboard. The second period belonged to the Crusaders as Dave Montgomery scored from Kevin Deitner and Troy Pocaluyko at the 13:46 mark and then Troy scored from Kevin Deitner and Len Stamper at 10:15 to tie the score at three. The remainder of the second period was scoreless. The teams had played seven minutes of the third period when Drayton scored to take the lead. In less than two minutes, Brus­ sels came back to even the score once more when Dave Montgomery scored from Troy Pocaluyko . Goalie Mike Smith defended the posts well as the rest of the game remained scoreless to end in a 4-4 tie. The next game will be at home on Sunday night at 8 p.m. against Seaforth. their own, two on the powerplay, for a 3-1 lead after one period. Marty Rutledge and Kevin Talsma combined to set up Brian Campbell on the powerplay four minutes into the second period while Lucan clicked twice for a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes. In the third Strome and Paul Coultes scored for the Bulls while Lucan added four of their own for a decisive 9-4 win. Friday night the Bulls allowed Wellesley two late goals for a come from behind 5-5 finale. The Apple­ jacks, probably the best skating team in the division, are winless on home ice this season. Mike Vincent redirected a Ron Buchanan point shot home for an early lead before Wellesley re­ bounded for two of their own. A Jason Coulter powerplay goal from Bob McMillan and Marty Rutledge ended the first period tied at two. Rutledge scored seven seconds into the middle period and set up Kevin Talsma on the powerplay for a 4-2 lead. Wellesley cut the margin to 4-3 when an Applejack winger went coast to coast for a picture play goal late in the period. Late in the third the Bulls surprised the Wesllesley power­ play when shorthanded two men, Vincent flipped home a Rutledge breakaway rebound. However, on the same powerplay Wellesley came back to make the score 5-4 and with 69 seconds remaining tied the game at five. John Steffler faced 35 shots on the night. Sunday afternoon the Bulls again blew a two-goal lead in the dying minutes of play and were forced to accept a 5-5 tie with the visiting Exeter Hawks. A pair of powerplay markers, Mike Vincent from Rutledge and Strome followed by Fritz from Taylor and Coultes were offset by Exeter goals for a 2-2 tie after a period. The Bulls’ powerplay scored the only goal of the second when Rutledge and Kieffer set up Brian Campbell. In the third, a Strome goal was matched seconds later by an Exeter powerplay goal. The Bulls increas­ ed their lead to 5-3 when Rutledge and Campbell combined for a shorthanded goal, but two Hawk goals, the last with. 45 seconds showing on the clock ended the game tied at 5. Due to injuries Todd Rice made his debut in the Bulls net, stopping 34 shots and was especially sharp in the third period when Exeter outshot Brussels 18-5. The Bulls have five regular scheduled games remaining, two at home this weekend. Saturday night at 8:00 sees the Mitchell Hawks in town while Sunday at 2:00 the Juniors face Tavistock. The Bulls $50 ticket winner was Mildred Wheeler of Brussels. Sprouts win over Elma-Logan Brussels Sprouts (four and five year old variety) skated away with a 7-2 win when they entertained Elma-Logan Saturday in Brussels. Chad Fischer led the way with two goals. The scoring was evenly distributed from there as Andy Van Beek, Kenny McCallum, Matthew McCall, Tyler Bragg and Matthew McLellan each scored a goal. Nolan Krotz and Mark Fischer also turned in good games. Brussels Atoms defeat Elma-Logan Elma-Logan visited Brussels and skated off with a 5-3 victory in WOAA Atom action Friday night. Elma-Logan skated off at the end of the first period with a 1-0 lead but Brussels fought back to tie the game midway through the second when Randy Beuermann scored from Trevor Machan and David Lewington. Elma-Logan took the lead back just 33 seconds later then added another goal 28 seconds after that and moved the lead up to 4-1 with just two seconds left in the period. Midway through the third Elma- Logan pushed the lead to 5-1 before Brussels started a comeback that proved too little and too late. Randy Beuermann scored goals with 5:50 and 2:45 left in the gt\me, both assisted by Trevor Machan but Brussels ran out of time for a comeback. The team will start its playoff series against Howick on Thursday, Jan. 26 in Howick. Belgrave Pee Wees split week's action Monday night, Belgrave Pee Wees played the very strong and undefeated Zurich squad. Zurich led 2-0 before Mark Robinson scored from Mark Olson and Brad Robinson to end the first period. Zurich then scored six goals, before Peter Gusso scored from Brad Robinson. Mark Robinson then scored from Brad Robinson to complete the scoring. BELGRAVE 3 - ELMA-LOGAN 2 Thursday night, Elma Logan scored the only goal of the first period. In the second period, Brad Robinson drew the defense and goalie to him, then passed to Peter Gusso who tapped it in. There was no further scoring until the third period, when Mark Robinson scored from Brad Robin­ son and Gusso. Belgrave then pressed the attack with the Elma- Logan goalie making some good saves, but finally Brad Robinson scored an unassisted goal to take a 3-1 lead. Elma-Logan scored to close the gap but could not get the equalizer. Although they did not figure in on the scoring Tim, Brandon and Aaron Coultes, Kyle and Corey Moran, Doug Wilson, Mark Olson and Brent Robinson and Mike Golley, all had strong games. Brussels Novices defeat Kurtzville 7-0 Brussels Novices played unkind hosts to Kurtzville Saturday as they sent the visitors home with a 7-0 loss in Novice Houseleague action. Trevor Wilson had three goals and Corey Campbell two, to pace the Brussels side. Corey Campbell got Brussels off to a good start with an unassisted goal early in the first period. Trevor Wilson then scored two in a row before the first period ended with Jamie Thomas assisting on the first and the second being unassisted. Jamie Thomas continued the scoring outburst in the second when he scored an unassisted goal then set up the second goal by Corey Campbell. Nine seconds into the third period Trevor Wilson completed his hat-trick with an unassisted goal. Clint Fischer completed the scoring, picking up the first goal of his career, with an assist from Corey Campbell. Elma-Logan upsets Brussels Atoms Brussels Atoms Rep. team tra­ velled to Kurtzville Thursday, Jan­ uary 19 to play Elma-Logan and came away with a 5-0 win. David Lewington started Brus­ sels off well in the first period when he was awarded a penalty shot and was successful. That 1-0 score stood up until the second period when Jamie Smith started things off with a goal from Trevor Machan with 9:14 left in the period. Less than two minutes later Jeff Lewington converted an assist from Trevor Machan. With 1:49 left in the game Randy Beuermann scored from Jeff Lew­ ington on a powerplay. Then with 53 seconds left in the period Shane Wilson scored with Trevor Machan getting his third assist of the game. The final period was scoreless.
