Brussels Livestock Active demand for steers, heifers The Friday market at Brussels Livestock Inc. met an active de­ mand on all classes of slaughter cattle with steers and heifers selling steady. There were 688 cattle and 303 pigs on offer. Choice steers sold for $91 to $95 with sales to $97; good steers brought $85 to $90. Four steers consigned by Alvin Ritz of Monkton, averaging 1050 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.73. Three steers consigned by Murray Steven, averaging 1177 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.56. Eight steers consigned by Doug Clark of RR 5, Goderich, averaging 1095 lbs., sold for an average of $89.54. Fourteen steers consigned by Jack Mikel of RR 3, Mitchell, averaging 1075 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.39. Twenty-eight steers consigned by Maple Emblem Farms of RR 1, Dungannon, averaging 1246 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.05. One steer consigned by Bob Fair, of RR 3, Ripley, weighing 1150 lbs., sold at $88.50. Twenty-five steers consigned by Underwood Farms of RR 1, Wing­ ham, averaging 1349 lbs., sold for an average price of $88.24. Eight steers consigned by Bert Hastings of RR 4, Wingham, averaging 1196 lbs., sold for an average price of $88.09. Six steers consigned by Doug Wagg of RR 5, Mitchell, averaging 1147 lbs., sold for an average price of $88.01. One steer consigned by Jim Ritz of RR 2, Monkton, weighing 1300 lbs., sold at $87.75. Ten steers consigned by Tom and Roger Moore of RR 4, God­ erich, averaging 1169 lbs., sold for an average price of $87.50. Nine­ teen steers consigned by Murray Shiells of RR 3, Wingham, averag­ ing 1198 lbs., sold at an average price of $87.59. Nine steers consigned by Ho­ ward Martin of RR 3, Brussels, averaging 1182 lbs., sold at $87.21. Twenty-two steers consigned by Triple K Farms of Lucknow, aver­ aging 1325 lbs., sold for an average price of $86. One steer consigned by Al Scott of RR 2, Stratford, weighing 1190 lbs., sold for $89.75. Ten steers consigned by George Blake of RR 2, Brussels, averaging 1190 lbs., sold for an average of $90.25. Ten steers consigned by Murray Mulvey, averaging 1117 lbs., sold for $89.72. Three steers consigned by Brian Mulvey, of RR 1, Clifford, averaging 1027 lbs., sold at an average price of $89.86. Ten heifers consigned by Dave Elphick of RR 3, Lucknow, averag­ ing 1100 lbs., sold for an average price of $88.78. Seven heifers consigned by Wayne King of RR 1, Gorrie, averaging 1061 lbs., sold for an average price of $88.37. Six heifers consigned by Don Fraser of RR 2, Blyth, averaging 1002 lbs., sold for $87.29. Twenty- three heifers consigned by Elwood Fitch of RR 1, Wroxeter, with an average weight of 1122 lbs., sold for an average price of $86.95. Choice cows sold at $54 to $57; good cows went for $50 to $54; and canners and cutters fetched $45 to $50. Weaner pigs under 40 lbs., sold for an average price of $53.34 with a high of $60; 40 to 50 lb. pigs sold for an average of $62.04 with a high of $65; 50 to 60 lb. pigs sold for an average price of $61 with a high of $64; 60 to 70 lb. pigs sold for an evening’s top winner, capturing both the Brussels Bank of Com­ merce Trophy for achieving the Highest Aggregate Score at the Brussels Fair, and the Cal Krauter Trophy for the Highest Combined Score in both conformation and showmanship at the Fair. Carla Johnston, Donna Marie’s sister, accepted both awards on behalf of her older sister, who was unable to be present. Carla then went on to win one of her own, the Howard Bernard Fuels Trophy for the Highest First Year Member at the Brussels Fair. Carla is also a member of the Brussels 4-H Dairy Calf Club. Dave Moody of the Brussels Bank of Commerce, John McIntosh of the Brussels Agricultural So­ ciety, and Joan Bernard of Howard Bernard Fuels presented each of the above awards to Carla Johnston in turn. Lisa McKay of RR 2, Brussels, a member of the Brussels 4-H Beef Calf Club, was the recipient of the Topnotch Feeds jacket as the winner of the Highest Judging Score at the Brussels Fair, with a score of 99 out of 100 points. Ralph Watson of the Topnotch Feeds made the presentation. Jennifer Sanders of RR 4, Brus­ sels, a member of the Brussels 4-H Horse Club, was presented with the Brussels Agricultural Society Award by Fair Director Brian Rutledge for the High Point Aggre­ gate Horse Club score at the Brussels Fair. Darren Johnston of RR 2, Blue­ vale, was the winner of the Brussels Livestock Inc. trophy as average price of $50; and 70 lbs. and over sold for an average price of $49. Mr. Meier replaces John Campbell of RR 3, Bayfield who held the office for the past FRED MEIER three years. Mr. Campbell will continue to serve as a director. Mr. Meier held the position of first vice-chairman prior to this election. Also elected to the execu­ tive were John Stafford, RR 1, Wroxeter, first vice-chairman and George Pinkney, RR 3, Listowel, second vice-chairman. Howard Wilson, RR 3, Owen Sound, retired as director this year and was replaced by John Hill, RR 4, Owen Sound, elected at the Zone 2 annual meeting held in Owen Sound.- The Co-operative’s after tax earnings of $1.8 million were similar to the previous year and sales of $158,534,000 increased by pion Junior Showman. Darren is a member of the Brussels 4-H Beef Calf Club, and Henry is a member of the Hallrice 4-H Dairy Calf Club. three per cent. Generally, the Co-operative is a sound financial position and shareholder equity increased to figure one half total assets. The Co-operative was able to pay down debt, increase equity and pay dividends to its member share­ holders. Emphasis in the coming year will continue toward building sales volume, improving technolo­ gy and gross margin. Gay Lea Co-operative Limited has operated for 30 years in the Province of Ontario beginning operations in 1958. Its dairy pro­ ducts are sold across Canada and it is owned by 3,600 Ontario dairy producers. Its facilities are located at Weston, Guelph, Teeswater, Woodstock, Baden and Ottawa.
