London man was once Brussels community leader HARRY BOWLER A former Brussels resident Harry Bowler, passed away in Westminister Hospital, London, Ont. on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1989. Mr. Bowler was born in Aber­ deen, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada at the age of 19, and settled Obituaries ORVAL HARRISON Mr. Orval Harrison of Listowel and formerly of Moncrieff passed away Sunday, Jan. 15, 1989 at the Listowel Memorial Hospital at age 77. Born May 17, 1911 in Alma Township he was the son of the late William Harrison and the former Ada Cole. Mr. Harrison farmed at Moncrieff before moving to Lis­ towel in 1973. He is survived by his wife the former Leola Mills whom he married on April 11, 1934 in Stratford. He was a member of the Calvary United Church in Listowel and Golden Rule Oddfellows Lodge 420 of Monkton. He is survived by his wife, also one sister Lillian (Mrs. Joe Smith) of RR 1, Monkton, and one brother Robert Harrison and wife Marion of RR 1, Monkton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at the Robert Trench Funeral Home, Lis­ towel on Tuesday, January 17 at 2 p.m. Spring interment will be at Norris Logan Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Lung Association or charity of one’s choice were appreciated. Golden Rule Oddfel­ low Lodge 420 held at memorial service on Monday evening at 9 p.m. AGNES S. McCOWAN Agnes S. McCowan of Sudbury, Ontario, died January 5, 1989, in Ruskin, Florida, in her 77th year. Mrs. McCowan is survived by her husband, Hugh; one son, John, of Sudbury; and four daughters: Doreen (Mrs. Les Andrews) of London; Catherine (Mrs. Vic Boz- zer) of Regina, Saskatchewan; Eliz­ abeth (Mrs. Vic Jamieson) of Brussels; and Janet (Mrs. Ben Woodley) of Toronto. She was predeceased by one daughter, Jean Anne. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Her funeral was held on Mon­ day, January 9, 1989 at Lewer’s Funeral Home in Ruskin, followed by cremation. Donations to the Laurentian Hospital Cancer Re­ search Clinic, 41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario, P3E 5J1 would be appreciated. MRS. JEAN WATTS Mrs. Eva Jane (Jean) Watts passed away on Jan. 2, 1989 in Belleville, Ont. in her 79th year. Surviving are one daughter, Pauline, Mrs. Morris Jones of Grafton and three sons, Max of Brussels, Stephen of RR 2, Thomasburg and Hubert of Fox- boro. Also surviving are three sisters, on brother, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchldren. She was predeceased by her husband Lisle Watts and three brothers. The funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 6, 1989 at 1 p.m. at O’brien, Steel, Pinkston and Grant Funeral Home, 30 Moira St. E., Belleville, Ont. Interment was at Belleville Cemetery Mausoleum. Pallbearers were David Watts, Darrin Watts, Matthew Watts, Peter Jones, Murray Houston and Murray Kellington. in Chesley, Ont. Later he arrived in Brussels and operated a chicken hatchery with his partner Robert Pearson. After disposing of that business, he owned and operated a flour and feed store in Brussels. He was keenly interested in sports where he was coach of the local intermediate hockey team, also captain and coach of the football team, of which he was an ardent player. Under his leadership the team advanced all the way to the W.F.A. finals to be defeated by ELLEN JOHNSTON Ellen Christine (Phillips) John­ ston of Auburn passed away at Clinton Public Hospital, Saturday, January 14, 1989. She was in her 91st year. A life-long resident of Auburn, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ezechiel Phillips. She married Thomas S. Johnston who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her brother Robert in 1974 and her sister Laura in 1988. The funeral service was held from the Tasker Funeral Home, Blyth on Monday, January 16, 1989 with Pastor James Carne officiat­ ing, assisted by Rev. Patt Nunn. Spring interment will be in Dun­ gannon Cemetery. Owen Sound. He served as council­ lor for the village under the reeveship of Robert Bowman, and was also on the local School Board. In 1940 he enlisted with the Perth Regiment, and served three years overseas with the Armed Forces. In June 1945, he returned EDWARD GARNISS A native of Morris Township and a farmer for many years in the township, Edward Garniss of RR 4, Wingham, passed away in Wing­ ham and District Hospital on Monday, Jan. 9. He was 77 years of Ethel home, and he and his family moved to London, Ont. where he was employed with the London Free Press until he retired. The funeral was held on Friday, Jan. 13 from the Evans Chapel Furtney Funeral Home, 648 Hamil­ ton Road in London, Ont. He is age and death followed a brief illness. Mr. Garniss was born in Morris on Aug. 11, 1911, son of the late John Garniss and Charlotte Sav­ age. He attended Browntown School and farmed all his adult life. He was the dear brother of Mrs. Earl (Lillian) Elliott and Edith Garniss, both of Bluevale; Bert and Isobel Garniss of Wingham; broth­ er-in-law of Muriel Garniss of Brussels and Burns Moffatt of Bluevale. He was predeceased by survived by his wife the former Viola Fox, one son Kenneth Bow­ ler, and his wife Marlene, one daughter Andrea Allison, two grandchildren Nancy Bowler, Ro­ bert Allison, all of London, one nephew in Ottawa, Ont. and sever­ al nieces and nephews in Scotland. his sister, Ethel Moffatt and broth­ ers, Frank, Harry and Tom. Friends paid their respects at The McBurney Funeral Home until Wednesday when complete funeral service was conducted at two o’clock by Rev. Bonnie Lamble of Bluevale United Church where Mr. Garniss was a member. Final resting place will be in Brandon Cemetery, Belgrave. Honorary pallbearers were Keith and Brian Moffatt, ,Doug and Bill Garniss, Murray and Jim Garniss. ARE FUN-DAMENTAL! Monday evening 14 tables of euchre were played at Ethel Com­ munity Hall. The hosts were Ethel Women’s Institute ladies. Winners were: high lady, Lois McLean; high man, Charles Harri­ son; low lady, Myrle Bowes; low man, Clifford Stevens; most lone hands, Helen Cullen and John Subject; lucky numbers, Scott Mc­ Lean and Beryl Smith; lucky cup, Lloyd Smith.
